action

The bachelor Felix enjoys his life in Munich as a happy single. He can do little with the family life of his friends. His annoying brother Henne, who has taken shelter with him, leads him to earn a little money by donating sperm. When Felix loses his fertility in an accident with his brother's pet - a vicious ferret named Karsten - his attitude changes and he wants to start a family with the recipient of his sperm donation. Unfortunately, the recipient is a well-known TV presenter, Maren, so getting to her is difficult. Felix, however, does not give up his family dream and tries in many unsuccessful attempts to approach her. For example, he finds out in which swimming pool Maren regularly goes swimming, and he visits it with his godchild to present himself as a good father. So he finally arouses the interest of Maren, in whose relationship with the impotent Ralph, problems arise. Maren and Felix get closer, but in a dispute between Maren's fiancé Ralph and Felix, his sperm donation and expected paternity are revealed. When it turns out that Felix's sperm donation has not yet been used because his brother had lied to him about this to cheer him up, Maren turns away from Felix. At first he withdraws and tries to find his peace, which he does not succeed. In a conversation with his father, during which he learns that his brother Henne has been adopted, but they were and still are a happy family, he decides to fight for Maren. That succeeds and the two become a couple.

Five years later, Maren's little daughter is sitting next to Henne and it is obvious that he is her biological father. Maren is now pregnant again, this time through Felix's sperm donation.

reception

criticism

Annett Scheffel from the Süddeutsche Zeitung wrote in her review that, in her opinion, Schweighöfer had made himself comfortable in “Schweiger's climes”: “The result is a good mood film about a big city single and his sudden father feelings. In a summery, enthusiastic video clip look, charming actors tell of the beautiful, crazy existence in the woven film romance. Longing chase for the women, rough beer jokes keep the men happy. "

Michael Stadler from the Abendzeitung praised both the “glossy pictures” in the joys of fatherhood and the “high identification potential” that Schweighöfer offers through his game. However, he was critical of the script, which has bright spots like the character drawing of the character hen and his ferret, but pursues "simple conflict solutions in a rarely funny film". In addition, the comedy misses the necessary narrative rhythm and Schweighöfer's acting performance seems reduced.

Christoph Petersen von Filmstarts found that Schweighöfer “on the spot” with fatherly joys : “The directing career changer is getting better and better at producing“ big ”pictures at Hollywood level like his role model Til Schweiger , but what about timing and story and actor management, its development has stalled. "Petersen particularly praised the appearance and staging of the film, but criticized the fact that the production" felt like the stringing together of individual skits ", the" a series of hilarious slapstick scenes, but also similarly many gunshots ”, and the“ love story lives almost exclusively from the natural charm of the actor Schweighöfer ”and“ moreover hardly develops its own momentum ”.

success

Vaterfreuden celebrated its premiere on January 29, 2014 at the Mathäser-Filmpalast in Munich and was released for public screening in Germany on February 6 by its distributor, Warner Bros. At the end of the first screening weekend, the feature film recorded 483,000 viewers, displacing Martin Scorsese's biopic The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) from the top of the German cinema charts. Schweighöfer's third directorial work not only brought him his third number 1 placement in two years, but also the most successful start that a film with him in the lead role has made to date. The copy cut was above the 750 visitor mark when it was shown in 644 cinemas. Including preview performances and a further 440,000 moviegoers, Vaterfreuden reached the million mark in the second week of screening.

A total of more than 2.36 million cinema-goers saw the film by the end of the year. The total box office income in Germany was 17.7 million euros. The film thus took eighth place in the German cinema annual charts in 2014 and ranks second behind Philipp Stölzl's Der Medicus among the most successful German productions of the year.
