The small town of Vathy ( Greek Βαθύ ( n. Sg. ) Also Ano Vathy 'Ober Vathy', more rarely Paleo Vathy 'Alt Vathy') in the east of the Greek island of Samos is one of the oldest settlements on the island. Vathy has 1888 inhabitants, including the surrounding rural settlements 3147. Together with the city of Samos , Vathy forms an almost closed settlement area.

location

The village of Vathy is located in the east of Samos. With 43,638 km² it is the second largest town in the municipality of Samos by area. The area extends from the west coast of the Gulf of Vathy ( Kolpos Vatheos Κόλπος Βαθέος) to the Mykali beach (Παραλία Μυκάλη) in the south and to Cape Praso (Ακρωτήριο Πράσο) in the northeast. The city of Samos borders in the north, Kokkari in the north- west, Mytilinii in the west and Paleokastro in the south-east . The more recent development of the small town of Vathy stretches northwest down to the sea and borders there on the settlement of the city of Samos. To the east of the Vlamari plateau are the villages of Agia Zoni and Kamara . The settlements of Varella and Drosia are to the south near Paleokastro, Mesokambos in the very south on Mykali beach , the scattered settlements Koumarionas and Zervou to the west on the road to Mytilinii. The hamlet of Kedros is located on the national road 62 to the northwest near the coast.

history

People probably settled here as early as the middle of the 16th century. At the beginning of the 17th century, refugees from the Peloponnese founded the place on the ruins of an ancient settlement in the area of today's district Moraitochori (Μωραϊτοχώρι). Due to the location on a saddle, hidden between the mountains Koutsomylos and Varela approx. 80 m above the largest natural harbor on the island, one was safe from pirate attacks. Ottoman records of that time have the place name Ahirlasi . In the middle of the 18th century, Vathy developed into one of the largest villages on the island. The name of the Chiotika district (Χιώτικα) suggests that people from Chios also settled here. There was no settlement by the sea, only the area of Gialos (Γιαλός coast) served as a port. In this area, residents of Vathy and newly settled traders from the Ionian Islands began building large warehouses. To distinguish them, they called the slowly growing place Kato Vathy (Κάτω Βαθύ) in contrast to the old place, which was called Pano Vathy (Πάνω Βαθύ) or Chorio (Χωριό).

To this day, Vathy has been able to retain its traditional character. Small streets, staircases, houses built close together and small old churches still characterize the townscape. Only the buildings of the school (δημοτικό σχολείο) and the local administration (κοινοτικό κατάστημα) do not match the uniform appearance of the site.

Grain and tobacco cultivation used to be widespread on the formerly agricultural Vlamari plateau east of the city. Today vegetables, grapes and olives are only grown around the hamlets of Kamara and Agia Zoni .

After Samos was annexed to Greece, Vathy formed an independent rural community from 1918 to 1997 ( Κοινότητα Βαθέος Kinótita Vathéos ). The majority of the associated settlements emerged in the second half of the 20th century. In the course of the territorial reform in 1997 , eight rural communities (gr. Κοινότητες) and the municipality of Samos ( Δήμος Σαμίων Dímos Samíon ) were merged to form the municipality of Vathy ( Δήμος Βαθέος Dímos Vathéos ). The four island communities created at that time were merged by the Kallikratis program decided in 2010 to form the community of Samos , Vathy received the status of a city district (Δημοτική Κοινότητα). Due to the separation into two communities in 2019, the place belongs to the community of Anatoliki Samos .

There are two monasteries east of Vathy

  • The Agia Zoni monastery, founded in 1695, is located in the hamlet of the same name. The frescoes in the church date from the 17th century.
  • The Zoodochos Pigi monastery was founded in 1756. Due to its location approx. 300 m above sea level, you have a view along the east coast of the island and the nearby Turkish coast.
