history

Performance of the children's musical Regenbogen on the Felsenbühne Rathen

In the summer of 1945 a small group of Dresdeners around the opera singer Emil Grotzinger gave their first concerts on the outskirts of Dresden in the inn in Gittersee . Despite a lack of material for props and money for fees, the troupe, which took the name Volksoper Dresden in the course of the year , stayed together and performed the opera Der Bajazzo by Ruggero Leoncavallo on November 24, 1945 . In the years to come, the Volksoper played in many other inns in and around Dresden in addition to Gittersee. On July 1, 1949, the regional association of the Volksbühne took over the ensemble as its third under the name of the State Opera Saxony .

Due to the lack of space and development opportunities in Gittersee, the ensemble moved to its current headquarters in the Goldenen Weintraube in Radebeul on July 15, 1950 , only a few meters away from the residence of the former general music director of the Dresden Semperoper , Ernst von Schuch , and his wife, the chamber singer Clementine by Schuch-Proska . On August 29, the first performance was given with Puccini's Tosca . The premiere of Weber's Der Freischütz followed in September of that year .

At the beginning of 1951, the actors from the Maxim Gorki Theater in Schwerin joined the ensemble. With the later merger of the state opera with the state theater , the company got its current name: Landesbühnen Sachsen .

In the years up to 1954, the sculptor and building sculptor Reinhold Langner decorated the state stages with wooden reliefs with drama motifs.

In the mid-1950s, the Radebeul City Orchestra was dissolved as the City Symphony Orchestra; the orchestra of the state theaters thus, so to speak, succeeded it as a local orchestra.

From the mid-1950s, the Rathen rock stage was used, including with the Freischütz since 1956 . In April 1958 the ballet division made its debut with the dance play In a Bohemian Village , which made the state theaters , together with their own orchestra, a multi-discipline theater .

After the fall of 1989/1990 , the state theaters were retained as one of three state theaters in Saxony.

The main building was last reopened in October 2001 after a comprehensive renovation which took a year and a half. In 2005, the client of the parent company received the Radebeul client award in the commercial / public buildings category .

After a sold-out farewell performance on July 7, 2013, ballet director Reiner Feistel moved to Chemnitz for the 2013/14 season, accompanied by some of his dancers.

Financing of the state theaters and Radebeul monument protection

In August 2012, the state-owned company was converted into a state-owned GmbH, and the city of Radebeul was forced by the Free State through the Saxon Cultural Areas Act to participate in the financing as the seat municipality. As a result, the previous director Christian Schmidt resigned from his office, which was still running until 2013; this was then handed over to Manuel Schöbel in October 2011 . In this context, the Landesbühnen orchestra was merged with the Neue Elbland Philharmonie to form the Elbland Philharmonie Sachsen in June 2012 , with 30 of 102 jobs being cut. The New Elbland Philharmonic was also created from the merger of the symphony orchestra in Pirna and the previous Elbland Philharmonic Saxony from Riesa.

On July 1, 2012, Radebeul “sacrifices monument protection” in order to be able to financially pull out all “registers for the state theaters of Saxony”. Responsibility for monument protection was transferred to the district of Meißen in Grossenhain . In return, the District Office should “think about setting up a counseling room in the job center on Dresdner Straße [in Radebeul].” With this, “Radebeul [the] monument archive that has been compiled over decades […] is losing, a real treasure trove of knowledge "As well as the" professional competence and [the] commitment of the employees for their city. "The" purely economic reasons [...] "and the majority decision of the city council were explained by the mayor in such a way that the" ever increasing burdens [...] of the lower monument protection authority without proper financial compensation as well as the regular financial participation of the city in the state theaters enforced by the state ”together with the backlog of processing of the tax certificates“ inherited ” from the former regional council Dresden for the depreciation of the monument have forced to this decision.

repertoire

Performance of the Casanova ballet in the Dresden Zwinger

Since then, the working and playing conditions have been continuously expanded and improved, in addition to the main stage there is now a smaller studio stage.

The repertoire of the state theaters of Saxony includes music theater ( opera , operetta , musical ), drama ( tragedy , comedy , fairy tale theater ), ballet evenings and concerts ( symphony and chamber concerts , until mid-2012). The Radebeul Orchestra has traditionally ended the artistic year on December 31 for around 50 years with Beethoven's 9th Symphony .

From May to September, the state theaters of Saxony regularly perform on the Rathen rock stage and in the Dresden Zwinger . In addition, guest appearances will take place in various locations within and outside the Free State of Saxony throughout the season . Concerts are also given regularly together with the Singakademie Dresden , with which the orchestra has a cooperation agreement.

The state theaters of Saxony have a special connection to Karl May , whose place of residence and death was also in Radebeul. Since 1984, pieces by Karl May from the state theaters have been performed regularly on the Rathen Felsenbühne.
