The Volvo S40 / V50 is a car model from the Swedish manufacturer Volvo , which was located in the compact class. It was manufactured from January 2004 to May 2012. In the model range it was placed between the coupé-like C30 and the mid-range models S60 and V60 . In March 2012, Volvo presented the new Volvo V40 at the Geneva Motor Show , replacing the S40 and V50 and the C30.

Model history

At the end of 2003, the renewed S40 (S40 II) notchback sedan was presented. This model was sold from June 2004, at the same time the V40 successor appeared as a matching station wagon variant . This was not marketed as V40 (II), but as V50 within the framework of the changed nomenclature. Both vehicle models rolled off the assembly line at Volvo's Belgian plant in Ghent .

The platform on which the S40 II / V50 is based, internally referred to as P1x, was developed together with Ford . In addition to the Volvo S40 II, V50 and C70 II models, the Ford Focus , Mazda3 and Mazda5 models that were released at the same time are based on this platform. The floor pan as well as the chassis and transmission components are identical to those of the Mazda3. As a result, passive safety is not the only development, but this was already similar with the predecessor, which was based on a platform together with the Mitsubishi Carisma . The body is 34% more rigid than its predecessor. In Euro NCAP -Crashtest the V50 as well as the Ford Focus achieved five stars.

The exterior was aligned to the current design language of Volvo, in the interior a "floating" center console is used, which should make the interior appear airier.

Facelift

In April 2007, a revision was carried out on the S40 and V50, which was mainly recognizable by the slightly modified bumpers and changed tail light graphics. The engines remained largely unchanged, only the top engine T5 now developed 169 kW (230 PS) instead of 162 kW (220 PS). As a special feature, the S40 was also offered as a flexible fuel vehicle with a 92 kW (125 PS) 1.8 l engine for bioethanol fuel.

In May 2012, Volvo stopped production of the S40 and V50. The Volvo V40 hatchback sedan came onto the market as the successor to both models .

In Australia it was sold as the V50 until the end of 2012. There it was still on offer with the 2.5 l five-cylinder T5 with 169 kW (230 PS).

Engines

For cost reasons, the four-cylinder engines are largely identical to those of the Ford Focus and Mazda 3. However, the 5-cylinder machines are purely Volvo's in-house developments, both in the gasoline and diesel sectors. Ford bought the 2.5-liter unit with 162 kW from Volvo for the Ford Focus ST or RS , Ford Mondeo , Ford Kuga and the Ford S-Max .

So far, Volvo has offered petrol engines in the S40 / V50 with a displacement of 1.6 l with 74 kW (100 PS) up to the top model T5 with 169 kW (230 PS). The diesel range ranged from the 1.6-liter with 80 kW (5 l / 100 km, 132 g CO 2 / km) developed jointly by PSA and Ford , to the 2.0D with 100 kW (136 PS) from the same collaboration, up to Volvo's own diesel engine D5 with 132 kW (180 PS). All diesel engines are equipped with diesel particulate filters (since 12/2005).

In spring 2010 the engine range and its nomenclature were revised. The two smallest petrol engines were no longer available, while the 2.0-liter engine was also offered as a FlexiFuel (2.0F with 145 hp) from November 2009. The 1.6-liter diesel was now called D2 and increased to 84 kW (114 hp). The 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel was replaced by a five-cylinder in-house design of the same displacement as the D3 with 150 hp and the D5 was replaced by the D4 with 177 hp.

As an answer to the Toyota Prius , the DRIVe variant with a 1.6-liter diesel engine, 109 or later 114 hp, start-stop and other details to reduce consumption came onto the market in spring 2010, but without a supplementary electric drive (hybrid) . (3.9 l / 100 km, 104 g CO 2 / km)
