history
The first documented mention of Owingen is in the Petershauser Chronik from 1134. The area was already settled by the Alemanni in the 5th century . The district of Taisersdorf was first mentioned in 1155.
Over the following centuries, there was a close, if not always smooth connection with the Salem Monastery , to which the village had been subordinate since 1324. During the Thirty Years' War Owingen was destroyed by the Swedes in 1634 and looted by the French in 1643. With the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss and the secularization of the Reichsstift Salem Owingen became Baden . During the revolution in May 1849 Owingen made weapons and soldiers available to the Baden vigilante group.

The community coped well with the structural change after the Second World War and has increased its population approximately sixfold to this day. In the 1960s Owingen was one of the first communities outside the larger towns on Lake Constance to have its own sewer system with a sewage treatment plant.
Owingen was an independent municipality in the Überlingen district from 1939 , which was added to the new Lake Constance district as part of the district reform on January 1, 1973 .
The community became known internationally through the plane collision in Überlingen on July 1, 2002. In the airspace over Owingen, a Bashkirian Airlines passenger plane (flight 2937) collided with a DHL cargo plane (flight 611). 71 people died in the accident, including many children who wanted to travel to Spain.

coat of arms
The coat of arms was approved by the district on May 19, 1981.
Blazon : "In gold an eight-spoke, eight-blade red mill wheel."
In the 19th century, a color stamp showed the image of the agricultural implements scythe and rake crossed at an angle behind a grain sheaf. Based on a proposal from the General State Archives in 1902, the municipality adopted the current coat of arms. It is intended to refer to the Owingen mill, which was sold in 1207 by Elisabeth von Owingen and her sons to the Salem monastery. The Baden coat of arms colors red and gold are a reminder that the Margraves of Baden had possessions there before 1200.

Culture and sights
The originality of Owingen is mainly due to the preservation of the historical building fabric - there are many houses in the old style, so that the historical townscape was preserved. A well-marked network of cycle paths creates close proximity to Lake Constance. The Jubiläumsweg Bodenseekreis and the Linzgauer Jakobsweg ( Via Beuronensis ) also run through the municipality .
The Owingen Lyrikweg , created for “ trains of thought around Owingen”, leads as a circular route in about one and a half hours of walking from the starting point at the Owingen town hall to lookout points in the center of the village. Along the way, seven poetry steles by the Owingen poet Gisela Munz-Schmidt invite you to reflect.

Buildings
- From 1771 to 1826, the Lugenhof was an official post and relay station of the Austrian Post on the Vienna – Freiburg long-distance route. Since the Oberamt Stockach was one of the central properties of Austria, the post office was opened in 1777 as the “Vorderösterreichische Postanstalt in the Reichsabtei Salmansweiler”. The Lugenhof was the traffic junction for the post roads in east-west and north-south directions. Most of the Breisgau also belonged to Upper Austria at that time, and the station was a resting place and resting place for travelers from Freiburg to Vienna. Here the post horses were re-harnessed and passengers found a hostel. Today's inn has its origins in this time. Initially owned by the Imperial Abbey of Salem , the Lugenhof passed to the Margrave of Baden in 1803 with the secularization . Its importance as a post office waned when traffic shifted to the road from Stockach via Owingen to Salem in the 1820s. Between 1905 and 1987 the Lugenhof was run as a farm before Max Markgraf von Baden made the property and land available for a golf course. With an extensive renovation and modernization of the listed building stock, the Lugenhof and the golf course became the property of the Owingen-Überlingen e. V over.
