The 2014 World Cup final in show jumping and dressage was the final of the World Cup series in two equestrian disciplines . It was held from April 17 to April 21, 2014 at Eurexpo in Lyon .

Equestrian sport in Lyon

The annual indoor riding tournament Equita 'Lyon , which takes place at the end of October / beginning of November , has been a CSI 5 * tournament since 2006. Two years later, the tournament was expanded to include international dressage tests (CDI 5 *). Since the tournament in 2009, World Cup competitions for Western Europeans in show jumping and dressage have been held here, and in the same year the tournament program was expanded to include international reining tests.

From October 30 to November 3, 2013, Equita 'Lyon was held differently as a CSI 5 *, CDI 4 * and CRI 3 * -A tournament. In April 2014, the World Cup finals in dressage and show jumping were held for the first time in Lyon.

Prize money

The World Cup final in Lyon was the most highly endowed World Cup final since the introduction of the World Cup in equestrian sport. In total, the tournament's prize money was over 1.7 million euros.

The show jumping final, whose title sponsor was Longines for the first time (instead of Rolex in previous years), was endowed with around 1.3 million euros, and the show jumpers were able to win a further 218,000 euros in the CSI 2 * and 3 * general competitions. The prize money for the finals of the dressage world cup series sponsored by the fashion designer Reem Acra was 250,000 euros (unchanged from the previous year).

Procedure and results

Grand Prix

The Grand Prix was held on Easter Saturday afternoon (April 19th) . This was the entry test of the World Cup final, but this was mandatory for all participating dressage riders.

There were only 17 riders at the start in the test: the Danish rider Nanna Skodborg Merrald had to finish the World Cup final before the first test because her horse Millibar failed the veterinary examination.

As expected, Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro won the Grand Prix . With a result of 87.129 percent, they clearly exceeded their previous world record of 85.942 percent.

2nd partial examination

On April 19, also from 8 p.m., the second test of the World Cup final took place. This was a jumping competition with one jump-off .

Andrius Petrovas was eliminated in the first special stage, Abdullah Sharbatly did not start after his 39th place in the first stage. This meant that there were only 38 horse-rider pairs left in the second partial test.

After the first three rides of the test, there were disagreements between the course designer Frank Rothenberger and the judges as to whether the time allowed should be reduced. The judges decided against it, because of the good conditions and the strong field of starters, there was a high number of faultless rides: in the normal round, 21 starter pairs remained faultless, of which eleven were again without faults in the jump-off.

After the first two partial exams, the points achieved by the participants are added together. These evaluation points are then converted into fault points.

3rd partial examination

The third partial test, a jumping competition with two different rounds , formed the end of the show jumping World Cup final . The exam took place on Easter Monday (April 21) from 2 p.m. She was not ridden against time, but an allowable time was provided.

In the intermediate ranking, Steve Guerdat and Patrice Delaveau were tied for first place before the third partial test. The morning before the test, however, Delaveau's gelding Lacrimoso went paralyzed, so that no further participation was considered for him.

In the first round of this test, which was held on Sunday afternoon, only the 30 best placed riders from the first two partial tests were allowed to participate, the 20 best starter pairs of the first round then qualified for the second round. Steve Guerdat had to accept four penalty points in both rounds of the test and thus slipped to fifth place in the overall standings. Daniel Deußer, who has been second to date, managed two more clear rounds with his stallion Cornet D'Amour , which brought him the World Cup final victory. With two clear rounds, Ludger Beerbaum (who was the last to qualify for the World Cup final) secured second place in the final ranking.
