London Borough of Richmond upon Thames [ ˈɹɪtʃmənd əˌpɒn ˈtɛmz ] is a borough in south-west London . He's the only one on either side of the Thames . When the Greater London administrative region was founded in 1965, it emerged from the Municipal Borough of Twickenham in the County of Middlesex and the Municipal Borough of Richmond and the Municipal Borough of Barnes in the County of Surrey .

The population in 2008 was composed of 87.9% white, 5.1% Asian, 1.9% black and 0.9% Chinese.

description

The municipality is not fully urbanized. There are several open spaces, notably Richmond Park and the Royal Botanic Gardens . The main settlements are Twickenham, St Margarets and Whitton to the west, Hampton and Teddington to the south and the metropolitan area of Richmond-Kew-Mortlake-Barnes to the east. The village ambience and several train and underground connections to London make these popular commuter cities.

Richmond, the center of this district, was originally called Sheane or Sheen . After Henry VII had the Sheen Palace rebuilt in 1502, the city and palace were renamed after his beloved castle in Richmond (North Yorkshire) . Only the gatehouse and some outbuildings of the Richmond Palace still exist. The old name can still be found today: the area east of Richmond is still called East Sheen , a train station in east Richmond is called North Sheen .

The German School London and the Swedish School London are located in the district , which means that the majority of Germans and Swedes living in London live in the surrounding areas. Richmond is one of the wealthiest boroughs in London. Fontainebleau (since 1977), Richmond (since 1980) and Konstanz (since 1983) are twin cities.

The most famous attractions are Hampton Court Palace , Ham House , Strawberry Hill , Richmond Park and the Royal Botanic Gardens (Kew Gardens). The Public Record Office , the British State Archives, is also located in Kew .

The suburb of Twickenham is the center of the English rugby union : The English national team plays in Twickenham Stadium , which is also the seat of the rugby football union . Just a few hundred meters away is The Stoop , the stadium of Harlequin FC and the Harlequin Rugby League .
