Wiesenthal is a municipality in the Wartburg district in Thuringia and is located in the northeastern foothills of the Rhön in a wide flood plain. The fulfilling municipality for Wiesenthal is the municipality of Dermbach .

history

The village was first mentioned in 795 in a deed of donation from the Fulda monastery . For centuries the place belonged to the Fischberg office , which was at times owned by the Lords of Neidhartshausen , the Lords of Frankenstein , the Counts of Henneberg- Schleusingen, the Fulda Monastery and various Ernestine duchies .

In 1616 the village burned down. The residents suffered severely in the Thirty Years' War . Through the "Fischberger Rezess" of 1764 the place came from the diocese of Fulda to Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach ( Amt Kaltennordheim ). After the remaining office of Fischberg / Dermbach came to Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach through the Congress of Vienna in 1815, the place was rejoined.

Buildings

  • Church of St. Jacobus from 1722, but the tower is older. The furnishings are simple, the pulpit has evangelist figures, the baptismal font is from 1599. The churchyard was once fortified. The churchyard wall still has loopholes .
  • "Schranshaus" is a house built in 1903 with a former village shop, which was chosen as the domicile by members of the Wiesenthaler Heimat- und Geschichtsverein. It is intended to set up a cultural village center and local museum in the house.
  • Only the remainder of a round tower has been preserved from the former fortification of the fortified cemetery .

Natural monuments

  • The Wiesenthaler Schweiz nature reserve was first designated on September 12, 1990 and has a total area of ​​34 hectares. A special feature is a large juniper slope.
  • The "Iben" or Eibengarten am Neuberg has been known as a botanical specialty far beyond Germany's borders for hundreds of years. The Eibenhain is always a magnet for nature lovers and hikers. The specialists and foresters also enjoy this closed yew deposit, which is one of the largest in both Germany and Thuringia. The Eibengarten extends about 1.25 km in length of the mountain slope from north to south and about 0.25 km in width from east to west. On an area of ​​4.5 ha this is with a population of 425 trees, which are 22–62 cm in diameter and 4–12 m high and are one of the largest closed yew trees. Of the Central German-Thuringian yew occurrences, the oldest yew trees are said to be here. It is estimated to be around 450 years old. Since Wiesenthal is located in the Rhön Biosphere Reserve together with its neighboring villages, the Ibengarten has also been incorporated into this as an existing nature reserve, the total area is 57.79 hectares, the first designation took place on January 24, 1932.
