history
The earliest written document is from 1144 and reads "castro Dierenstein". The name goes back to Old High German diorna (noble woman) and stein (castle made of stone). The castle name was transferred to the settlement.
The political community of Dürnstein was established in 1849/50.
As part of the Styrian community structural reform , it has been merged with the communities of Neumarkt in Steiermark , Kulm am Zirbitz , Mariahof , Perchau am Sattel , Sankt Marein bei Neumarkt and Zeutschach since 2015 ; the new community has been renamed Marktgemeinde Neumarkt in der Steiermark . The basis for this is the Styrian Municipal Structural Reform Act - StGsrG. A complaint brought by the municipality against the amalgamation to the Constitutional Court was unsuccessful.
