history

Beginning in the basement in 1949

In 1949, the company's founder, Walter Wirthwein, began producing octagonal wooden pegs in the basement of his house, which were used to renovate wooden sleepers in the railway superstructure.

In 1952 his father-in-law Friedrich Schmidt joined the company, which was converted into Wirthwein KG. A production hall for wood processing was built along the Tauber. In 1967 the company entered plastics processing with three injection molding machines . Since 1969 the company has been manufacturing with its own injection molding tools. For further diversification , Wirthwein took over the thermometer production from August Flor in 1972. In 1974 the company employed around 100 people. In addition to railroads, other branches of industry were also supplied with wood and plastic products and thermometers.

1950s: New building on the Tauber

After Walter Wirthwein's death in 1978, the company was divided on January 1, 1979. Klaus Wirthwein took over the thermometer production and has been running it as an independent company to this day. Udo Wirthwein continued to run Walter Wirthwein KG. The focus of the company remained wood processing and plastic injection molding for the railroad with around 60% of the business.

Wirthwein in Creglingen in the 1970s

In 1991, Wirthwein Brandenburg GmbH & Co. KG was established in Brandenburg-Kirchmöser on the site of a former shooting range of the National People's Army . Production was mainly for rail needs, as the ailing route network in the new federal states had to be renovated.

At the same time, the first contacts to the home appliance manufacturer BSH Bosch and Siemens Hausgeräte GmbH were made . From 1992 plastic parts for washing machines were produced, initially at the Brandenburg location and from 1996 in the newly built plant in Nauen .

In the following years new works were created. In 1998 a shop-in-shop production facility was established in Lodz ( Poland ).

In 1995, with the takeover of Georg Winkler KG and the establishment of Winkler Design GmbH & Co. KG in Röttingen ( Bavaria ), the company entered the interior design business with the production of interior fittings, counters, food serving and on-board restaurants for rail vehicles .

In 1999 Formtechnik Osterode GmbH & Co. KG was integrated into the Wirthwein Group in order to meet the increasing demand for injection molds.

In 2006 the Wirthwein family took over Bembé Parkett GmbH & Co. KG . The production, installation and revision of parquet floors, which has existed since 1780, has been continued in a legally independent company since then.

The construction of a transport infrastructure is one of the most important development priorities in China , for example the construction of high-speed lines . Wirthwein has been supplying plastic components for the construction of these railway lines from the Kunshan site since 2007 , for example for the prestigious Beijing - Shanghai route .

Further expansion of the company will take place in 2012: With effect from March 1, 2012, Wirthwein AG acquired essential assets of Thermoplast Technik Deutschland Holding GmbH & Co. KG (ttb-group) through three newly founded companies. The new subsidiaries are located in Eichenzell , Crimmitschau and Sasbach . In April 2012, a production facility was purchased in Muel, Spain. Storage of this size is used in solar, wind and water power plants, as well as the stabilization of power grids.

2017: The construction of a new assembly and logistics hall at the Polish location in Lodz is an important step into the future. The total investment is around 3.3 million euros. The new building is used for the assembly of dryer components and for storing purchased parts, raw materials, semi-finished and finished goods.

2018: The newly founded company "Shenyang Wirthwein Technology Co., Ltd." is a joint venture in which the two partners Wirthwein AG and "Changshu Automotive Trim Co., Ltd." (CAIP for short) each hold 50 percent of the shares. Series production will start on May 1, 2019.
