Zita Eva Funkenhauser (born July 1, 1966 in Satu Mare , Socialist Republic of Romania ) is a former German foil fencer . She was multiple German champion , Olympic champion and world champion.

Life

Like the fencers Monika Weber , Rita and Susanne König, Zita Funkenhauser is of Sathmar Swabian descent. At the age of twelve she was already a Romanian master. In 1979 her parents moved with her and her sister Hedwig from Romania to Germany, and her father registered his daughters with FC Tauberbischofsheim , where Zita soon belonged to the fencers who dominated German and international fencing for a decade, including several Olympic ones Won medals.

In 1986 Funkenhauser graduated from the Matthias-Grünewald-Gymnasium in Tauberbischofsheim . In addition to sport, Funkenhauser studied dentistry and received her doctorate in 1994. She is married to the fencer Matthias Behr , also Olympic and world champion, and has two children with him, Greta and Leandra Behr , who also fights. After finishing her sporting career, she now works as a dentist in Tauberbischofsheim.

In 1984 she was junior athlete of the year and became an Olympic champion with the team. In 1987 she was third in the choice of "Sportswoman of the Year" . In the same year she won the silver medal at the fencing world championships in Lausanne. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul , she won the bronze medal in individual after a final victory against Zsuzsanna Jánosi and defended the team title. At the World Championships in Denver the following year, she was also able to reach 3rd place. In 1992 she won silver with the team. In 1993 she was third in the world championship in Essen. In the same year she also won the German foil championship held in Tauberbischofsheim when she defeated Sabine Bau 5: 1, 5: 1 in the final. For her sporting success she received the silver bay leaf .
