Season course
After a relatively weak start with two draws in the first three game days, Hanover was initially in midfield, but then quickly worked its way up. On the sixth match day Mainz took the lead in the table, Hanover reached the promotion ranks for the first time. On the seventh matchday, Hanover rose to second place, Bielefeld took third place. While Bielefeld had to give up third place to Berlin again in the following week, nothing else changed at the top of the table until the seventeenth matchday. On the eighteenth matchday Hannover took over the top of the table for the first time, Mainz finished second. On matchday 21, the hitherto undefeated Hanoverians suffered their first defeat of the season at the later promoted Bochum. However, this did not change anything in the table. From the 24th matchday the table started moving again when a three-way battle between Mainz, Bielefeld and Fürth for places two to four developed. Meanwhile, Hanover continued to stand out at the top. On matchday 27, Hanover had ten points ahead of the runner-up from Mainz when Bochum tied the points with the fourth-placed from Bielefeld, the Berliners had just one point less. On matchday 30, Hanover was already on the rise, and the two subsequent defeats against Frankfurt and the later promoted Bielefeld did nothing to change that. Due to a defeat on the last match day in Berlin, Mainz slipped out of the promotion ranks, as both Bochum and Bielefeld won their games.
Hannover led the table in almost all ratings at the end of the season. They had the most victories (22, Bielefeld and Bochum each 19), the fewest defeats (3, Mainz suffered 6), the fewest goals conceded (37 before Bielefeld and Mainz with 38 each) and, with 93 goals scored, they were by a clear margin ( Bochum scored 69) the most dangerous team. After all, with a clear victory on the last day of the match, they were again ten points behind the runner-up.
