ferry Calais ( then : D 243 E2 (formerly N 1 ) to Paris )

The A2 is a trunk road in England , which runs between the A3 in London Borough (at the junction is also the tube station 'Borough') and Dover . In contrast to the other single-digit numbered A-roads, it does not form the border between two street numbering zones, but runs through the middle of zone 2. The border between zone 1 and 2 is the river Thames . The leadership of the A2 goes back to the Celts . The Romans built the road with cobblestones; they also built the first bridge over the Medway . In 1922 the street was numbered 2 and street class A. Dover is located at the narrowest point of the English Channel . Accordingly, a ferry connection to mainland Europe to Calais starts from there . In Calais, the N1 to Paris then forms the French continuation, so to speak - it connects two European capitals.

In 1922 the A2 was first moved to a bypass (Gravesend ( Watling Street )), where it took over part of the B2009 road; In 1924 the first bypass of Dartford followed . In 1927 the road A207 in south-east London ("Shooters Hill Road") was relieved by a bypass over which the A2 was led. These are Welling Way and Rochester Way. Today these are no longer an A road, as the A2 is led over a newer bypass road that runs further south. The planned road on which the A2 should run between Shooters Hill Road and Rochester Way (escape via Long Pond Road in Park Blackheath) was never built, so the A2 took over part of the A207 at that time. Further expansions and bypasses followed from 1968. Furthermore, the M2 motorway between Stroot and Faversham today is the alternative to the A2, which runs through the towns.

Between Rochester and Chatham, the A2 was relocated to the B2010, which ran parallel to the south, as this ran around the central area of the villages and was therefore preferred by traffic.
