Joachim "Achim" Höppner (born June 9, 1946 in Lübeck ; † November 18, 2006 in Germering ) was a German actor , director , voice actor , audio book speaker and reciter .

life and career

Höppner studied German , art and theater history , but dropped out of the course in favor of a career as an actor. In 1969 Höppner was one of the founding members of the "Theater in der Kreide" (TiK) in Munich .

From 1975 he worked mainly as a voice actor . An audience of millions was he known as the German voice of Ian McKellen's " Gandalf " in the Lord of the Rings - trilogy. After Klaus Kindler's death, he was cast as the new voice actor for Clint Eastwood , whom he voiced in Blood Work and Million Dollar Baby . He also lent his voice to Jon Voight , Richard Burton , Michael Caine , Donald Sutherland and the Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan . Höppner met the ironic undertone of the reserved Scotland Yard chief inspector Japp ( Philip Jackson ) in Agatha Christie's Poirot . In the Director's Cut of Miloš Formans Amadeus he took over the complete re-dubbing of F. Murray Abraham in the role of Antonio Salieri , since the voice actor of the original theatrical version, Gottfried Kramer , had passed away. In the series Family Guy Höppner lent his voice to the character Brian Griffin in the third season (episodes 12-16, 18-20) .

It was heard almost every day in many documentaries on public broadcasters and in the infotainment program Galileo . At Klassik Radio he was cast as “Friedrich Epenstein”, who told a “true story” every day. At Bayerischer Rundfunk , Höppner spoke for the extensive documentary series The Last of His Stand? about dying crafts. From 2001 until his death, Höppner was the regular speaker of the ZDF series Aktenzeichen XY ... unsolved , in which Höppner can still be heard today as an intro voice (as of April 2018). Since September 2, 2006, Höppner has been a commentator on the first 12 episodes of the DMAX documentary soap Die Ludolfs - 4 Brothers in the scrapyard .

Shortly before his death, he also read The Lord of the Rings - The Companions and The Silmarillion by JRR Tolkien as an unabridged audio book . Höppner appeared repeatedly in schools and cultural centers with poetry readings. In his hometown of Germering he supported social projects with literary evenings. For this he was awarded the Walter-Kolbenhoff Prize by the city in 2002 .

On November 18, 2006, the 60-year-old actor died of a heart attack . Höppner left behind his wife and two grown children.
