Alan "Ari" Engel (born September 5, 1983 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a professional Canadian poker player . From September 18 to October 24, 2006, he led the online poker world rankings for six weeks in a row and with nine rings is one of the most successful players in the circuit tournaments of the World Series of Poker . His biggest achievement to date was winning the main event of the Aussie Millions Poker Championship in January 2016.

childhood and education

Engel was born in Toronto to a rabbi and a Jewish teacher . He has a younger brother and a younger sister. Before his first birthday, Engel left his hometown with his family and then lived for three years in South Africa , eight years in Australia , one year in Israel and two years in Maryland . After high school in Chicago , he returned to Israel for a year. Engel then attended the Stern School of Business in New York City and, after graduating, moved to Las Vegas for six years . He now lives in Toronto again.

Poker career

Engel plays online under the nicknames BodogAri ( PokerStars ) , i am ari ( Full Tilt Poker ) and bodogari ( partypoker ) . In June 2015 his online tournament earnings amounted to over three million dollars . From September 18 to October 24, 2006, Engel was at the top of the PocketFives ranking, which lists the most successful online poker tournament players worldwide, for six weeks in a row . In late February 2018, he received the PocketFives Legacy Award at the American Poker Awards in Los Angeles . Since 2006, Engel has also participated in renowned live tournaments .

In mid-July 2006 was the first time Angel in the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas successful and died in a tournament variant No-Limit Hold'em the money. In early May 2008 he finished third at Borgata Deep Stack Poker in Atlantic City for around $ 120,000 in prize money. At the end of August 2016, he reached the final table of the EPT High Roller in Barcelona and came in sixth for more than 300,000 euros in prize money. In April 2017, Engel won the Main Event of the Mid-States Poker Tour in Milwaukee for a prize of around $ 115,000. At the beginning of May 2017, he finished fifth at the partypoker Million in Kahnawake for the equivalent of over 170,000 US dollars. At the end of March 2018, Engel prevailed against 6086 other players at the Mega Millions XVIII Quantum Reload in Los Angeles and received a prize of around 315,000 US dollars. At the 2019 WSOP , he won a Hold'em event and secured a bracelet in addition to the prize money of just under 430,000 US dollars .

In total, Engel has earned more than seven million US dollars with poker in live tournaments.
