The Associazione Sportiva Livorno Calcio is an Italian football club from the Tuscan port city of Livorno . The club color is Amaranto (burgundy red). The best placings so far were two Italian runner-up championships in 1919/20 and 1943.

history

AS Livorno Calcio was founded in 1915 after the merger of the clubs SPES Livorno and Virtus as US Livorno. In 1919/20 the club became Italian runners-up after losing to Inter Milan (2: 3). A year later they were eliminated in the semi-finals against arch rivals Pisa Calcio . In 1929 Livorno was a founding member of Serie A , where he played intermittently until relegation in 1949. In 1933 AS Livorno moved to the Stadio Armando Picchi stadium, which is still in use today, but which was initially named after Benito Mussolini's daughter and was called "Stadio Edda Ciano Mussolini".

The best result of those years was the second place in the season 1942/1943, behind the legendary team "Grande Torino" of AC Turin . In 1949 Livorno was relegated from Serie A. Shortly thereafter, the club was relegated to Serie C , where the club would play for many years from now on - with interruptions in 1955 and from 1964 to 1972.

In 1991, Livorno's license was withdrawn, which meant that Livorno had to start over in the sixth Italian division. The club rose in the following two years and reached the C2 series . In 1997 he was promoted to the C1 series , two years later it was taken over by Aldo Spinelli . With Spinelli's financial strength, they rose back to Serie B in 2001.

In 2003 Cristiano Lucarelli returned to his hometown and with his 29 goals in 41 games led Livorno to third place in Serie B in 2003/2004 and thus to promotion to Serie A. After 55 years, Livorno was again first class and reached ninth place in the table in the 2004/2005 season . With Cristiano Lucarelli, who scored 24 goals, Livorno also provided the top scorer.

In the 2005/06 season they finished sixth at the winter break. Nevertheless, Livorno's coach Roberto Donadoni was criticized by club president Aldo Spinelli, which led Donadoni to resign in February 2006. He was replaced by Carlo Mazzone , under the Livorno - despite seven defeats in a row - finished ninth. The soccer scandal in Italy in 2005/06 , in which the clubs Juventus Turin , Lazio Rome and Fiorentina were penalized with points deducted from Livorno, moved Livorno to sixth place and qualified for the UEFA Cup for the first time .

New coach for the season 2006/2007 was Daniele Arrigoni . In the 2006/07 UEFA Cup they reached the group stage with two wins over Pasching , in which Livorno surprisingly beat AJ Auxerre and Partizan Belgrade . In the second round, however, it was the end of the line against the eventual finalists Espanyol Barcelona .

In the league, Livorno had to fight relegation. After a 4-0 defeat at Udinese Calcio in March 2007, coach Daniele Arrigoni, who had been sacked in January of this year but was reinstated at Cristiano Lucarelli's insistence, was sacked again. He was followed by Fernando Orsi , who until then had been the assistant coach of Inter Milan at the side of Roberto Mancini . With Orsi, Livorno reached 11th place.

In the 2007/08 season , Livorno had to give up the two top performers Morrone (move to FC Parma ) and Lucarelli (move to Shakhtar Donetsk ). In the first seven games, the team got just two points, which led to coach Orsi being sacked and replaced by Giancarlo Camolese . This was replaced by its predecessor three game days before the end. Livorno rose from bottom of the table in Serie B.

Just one year later, after a third place in Serie B in 2008/09 and two victories over US Grosseto FC and Brescia Calcio in the relegation games , Livorno was immediately promoted back to Serie A. A year later, however, there were three game days before the end of the season despite one 3-1 win against Catania Calcio the renewed relegation to the second highest division. For Serie B, the experienced coach Giuseppe Pillon was committed, but after initial good results he was finally dismissed after a loss to Calcio Portogruaro Summaga on February 12, 2011. He was succeeded by Walter Novellino . But even under the new coach, Livorno did not achieve the longed-for promotion.

In the 2011/12 season there was a series of defeats after a relatively good start, after the last lost game against Brescia Calcio , Walter Novellino was dismissed on December 21, 2011. He was succeeded by Armando Madonna, the former midfielder of Lazio Rome and Atalanta Bergamo and ex-coach of AlbinoLeffe and Piacenza Calcio , who was officially presented on December 22, 2011.

On April 14, 2012, a fatal incident occurred in Pescara in the Stadio Adriatico during the match between Pescara Calcio and AS Livorno. Midfielder Piermario Morosini collapsed in the 30th minute on the field due to a cardiac arrest and could not be reanimated in the hospital. He was only 25 years old.

The 2012/13 Serie B ended Livorno in third place and finally rose again to Serie A under coach Davide Nicola . After a negative series, Davide Nicola was dismissed by President Spinelli on January 13, 2014, and Attilio Perotti , who had previously worked as Technical Director at Livorno and had already been an interim coach in the 2011/2012 season, was appointed as his successor. After just one game, the experienced Domenico Di Carlo was finally appointed as the new coach. Under his leadership, the club achieved only three wins and could not leave the relegation zone at any time. For this reason, Di Carlo was replaced by Davide Nicola on May 11, 2014. Despite everything, Livorno rose to Serie B at the end of the 2013/14 season from last place in the table .

On July 4, 2014 Nicola was succeeded as the new coach by former midfielder and coach of AS Bari and AS Varese Carmine Gautieri . After a mixed winter season and ongoing criticism of the formation and line-up, he was relieved of his office on January 4, 2015 and replaced on an interim basis by Ezio Gelain , the current coach of the junior team (Primavera). The results still left much to be desired, so that on March 18, 2015 Gelain was replaced by the former defender of AS Roma and the Italian national team Christian Panucci . However, the team only ended the 2014/2015 season in 9th place and missed promotion.

In the 2015/2016 season, Panucci was replaced by Bortolo Mutti after a series of failures , who only achieved two points in ten games, so Panucci was surprisingly brought back. This was again dismissed after a defeat against Trapani Calcio and Franco Colomba appointed as his successor. After numerous defeats, Ezio Gelain followed him as an interim solution. At the end of the season, Livorno was in 20th place in the table and had to relegate to the Lega Pro . Claudio Foscarini was signed as the new coach for the 3rd division . The 2016/17 season did not go as planned for Livorno, although they reached the playoff as third in the table of Lega Pro Group A, but were ultimately eliminated in the knockout phase.

For the 2017/18 season, the former defender Andrea Sottil , most recently under contract with Siracusa , was signed.

useful information

  • The supporters of the club maintain a historical rivalry with those of the club in the neighboring city of Pisa ( Pisa Calcio ). The Ultràs Livornos ( Brigate Autonome Livornesi ) are known to be avowed communists and anti-fascists , which is also due to the historical working-class tradition of Livorno.
  • An avowed fan of the team is the former Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, who was born in Livorno .
  • The outdated Stadio Armando Picchi is owned by the city of Livorno , due to the steadily declining number of spectators, the city has no interest in renovating or even building a new stadium in the south of the city.
  • The training center of the association and its junior departments is the seaside resort of Tirrenia north of Livorno.
