- Vienna / Austria : In the early morning hours, the Reichsbrücke plunges into the water across the full width of the Danube . A person dies in the accident.
- Verbandsgemeinde Adenau / Germany : Niki Lauda had a serious accident with his Ferrari 312T2 at the German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring .
- Trinidad and Tobago : The island state is transformed from a monarchy under Elizabeth II into a republic under the Commonwealth of Nations .

- Rodgau / Germany : Teaching begins at the Georg Büchner School , a cooperative comprehensive school .
Tuesday 3rd August
- Soviet Union : Political officer Valery Sablin , who led a mutiny on the Storoschewoi , a frigate of the Soviet Navy on November 9, 1975 , is executed. His mutiny inspired the author Tom Clancy in the constitution of his novel The Hunt for Red October , the 1990 Sean Connery in the lead role filmed is.
- Valcalepio / Italy : The wine-growing region receives the status of a Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC for short).
- Hildesheim / Germany : The Gallberg , an area of 42.5 hectares, is declared a nature reserve. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the city of Hildesheim.
Wednesday 4th August
- Punta de los Llanos / Argentina : The Roman Catholic Bishop Enrique Angelelli holds a mass in El Chamical in memory of the priests Carlos de Dios Murias and Gabriel Longueville who were murdered by the police. After the mass, two cars from the security forces followed him and pushed his car off the road at Punta de los Llanos. Angelelli dies at the scene of the accident.
- Owerri / Nigeria : Heartland FC football club is founded as Iwuanyanwu Nationale .
- Germany : The law on international patent conventions comes into force. It implements the Strasbourg Patent Convention , the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) and the Convention on the Grant of European Patents (EPC).
Thursday 5th August
- London / United Kingdom : Big Ben , the heaviest of the five bells of the famous clock tower at the Palace of Westminster at 13.5 t , has its first failure. As a result, he had to be stopped for a total of 26 days over the next nine months, until May 9, 1977.

- France : The 39th edition of the professional French soccer division 1 starts with its first matchday. At the end of the season, on June 8, 1977, FC Nantes prevailed and became champions for the fourth time .
- Vienna : Five days after the Reichsbrücke collapsed , Fritz Hofmann resigns from his position as the city councilor responsible for planning. On the same day, the first attempts to rescue the parts of the bridge on both banks by the Austrian army failed.

- Florida / United States : John Roselli , a mafioso who was supposed to testify before the US Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (SSCI) about the murder of John F. Kennedy , is found dead in a 55 gallon oil drum off the coast. He was strangled and shot and his legs had been sawed off.
