The Austria Triathlon in Podersdorf am Neusiedlersee is the oldest Austrian long-distance triathlon . In 1989 the first Austrian long distance championships were held here.

organization

The Austria Triathlon has been held annually at the end of August in Podersdorf am Neusiedlersee since 1988 . Origin of the event is the competition over the Ironman distance: 3.8 km are swum , 180 km driven wheel and 42.195 km run . Swimming takes place in Lake Neusiedl. The start is next to the lighthouse on the main pier in Podersdorf. Since the swimming course in the Neusiedlersee is very shallow with an average of one meter, the cycling and running routes are completely flat and the entry fees are comparatively moderate, the Austria Triathlon is suitable for the hunt for a best time for professionals as well as for beginners and hobbyists. At the Austria Triathlon, the Austrian state championship in long-distance triathlon has already been held several times - the first Austrian to cross the finish line is crowned national champion.

At the first Austria Triathlon in 1988, 39 participants (one woman) started, 36 of which reached the finish. In 1989 only one woman crossed the finish line and in 1990 and 1998 two women crossed the finish line. In 1992 and 1996 the wind was so strong that the organizers decided to skip swimming and to only hold one duathlon. At the 17th Austria Triathlon 2004, around 200 participants started, 151 of whom arrived at the finish.

The frequent wind and often also heat are considered to be the difficulties of this event. In order to be able to use the windless time for the swimming and cycling distance, the start time was brought forward to 7:00 a.m. in 2011. In 2011 there was also a sprint distance race for the first time.

25th edition 2012

The anniversary race for the 25th Austria Triathlon was held in 2012. The long and half distance competition took place on August 25th and a sprint distance competition was held on August 26th. In 2012 there were 1560 athletes at the start on both days of the event.

From 2013 the Austria Triathlon will have all distances in its program: starting with the sprint to the new Olympic to half and ironman distance. This is the only triathlon in Austria where all competitions start on one weekend.
The organizer is the Austrian Triathlon Club run by the organizers Kurt Mitschko and Daniel Döller . Kurt Mitschko died in June 2016 after a bicycle accident. His stepson Daniel Döller and sons Max and Tim Mitschko continue the event in his memory.

On September 1, 2018, the Austria Triathlon took place for the 30th time and the national champions of the long-distance triathlon were determined here for the 17th time. The last race here was on August 31, 2019. In July 2020 a "hunting race" with international participants was held.

The best time for women has been held since 2013 by Michaela Rudolf with 9:16:21 hours and the fastest time for men was achieved by Georg Swoboda in 2014 with 8:07:21 hours.

The course record on the half distance (1.9 km swimming, 90 km cycling and 21 km running) has been held by the Hungarian David Hanko with 3:49:45 h since 2019 .
