Armação dos Búzios , officially Município de Armação dos Búzios , (also Búzios for short ) is a place on the Costa do Sol northeast of the metropolis of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil .

history

Since the "discovery" by Brigitte Bardot and Jacques Cousteau in 1964, Búzios, formerly a sleepy fishing village, has been considered the "Pearl of the Costa do Sol" (sunny coast) 160 km east of Rio de Janeiro. Until 1997, when the city was founded by Lei Estadual No. 2,498 on December 28, 1995, Búzios was a district of the city of Cabo Frio , since then it has been an independent municipality with an area of 70.278 km² (2016).

Mainly due to immigration, including from Germany, the number of inhabitants has tripled since 1997. As of July 1, 2018, the population was estimated at 33,240.

Tourism became the most important branch of the economy before fishing: in Brazil only Foz do Iguaçu and the five metropolises ( Rio de Janeiro , São Paulo , Salvador , Recife and Brasília ) have more overnight stays by foreigners than small Búzios. Búzios is considered an elitist among Brazilians. Tourism infrastructure and varied gastronomy at a high level are - in a small space - unique in South America.

The center of the village is located on a 16 km² hilly peninsula. There are 25 beach bays around the peninsula. The year-round balanced maritime climate with low rainfall (740 mm in annual average) and the relative proximity to Rio de Janeiro (170 km) also contribute to the popularity of Búzios, as well as the fishing village ambience, which is quite well preserved due to strict building regulations: In Búzios only be built on one and two floors, construction is prohibited on most beaches. There are no large or multi-storey hotel complexes in Búzios, instead numerous family-run mini-hotels ( pousadas ) and “guest houses”.

Attractions

Culture and leisure

In addition to a golf course, visitors to Búzios are also offered water sports options. The diving area in front of Búzios, which is still relatively unknown in Europe, is continental-independent.
