Swell:

The Bassum – Herford railway line is a partially disused railway line from Herford via Bünde (Westf) to Bassum .

The middle section between Bünde and Rahden is a single-track branch line , the southern one between Kirchlengern and Herford is also single-track, but has been expanded as an electrified main line . Both parts are operated today as the Ravensberger Bahn with a connection to Bielefeld .

The northern section of the route from Rahden to Bassum has been closed except for a short section between Barenburg and Sulingen , which is only used for freight traffic .

history

Around 1845 the first plans for a branch line to the Hamm – Minden line of the Cologne-Minden Railway Company from Minden via Lübbecke to Osnabrück became known. However, they found no approval in conservative circles. Only twenty years later (1867) was a new Karlshafen  - Herford - Bünde - Lübbecke  - Lemförde rail project presented.

The plan for a railway from Bünde to Rahden of March 5, 1872, which was to branch off the Löhne – Rheine railway line , took on more concrete forms . But it was not until 1892 that planning for the single-track branch line Bünde (Westf) -Rahden was approved by the Prussian Minister for Public Works. Five years later, on February 22, 1897, the first groundbreaking took place, and on September 30, 1899 the railway was opened with two special trains that could be used free of charge. The following day, regular traffic began on the Prussian State Railways .

As early as September 29, 1900, the line was extended to the northeast to Sulingen , and from August 1, 1901, there was continuous traffic from Bünde (Westf) via Rahden and Sulingen to the main line (also known as the “taxiway”) Bremen – Münster in Bassum.

On July 1, 1904, the line was extended in a southerly direction by building a single-track connection between Kirchlengern and Herford on the Hamm – Minden railway line ; from Bünde to Kirchlengern, the facilities on the Löhne – Rheine railway line are used. In contrast to the northern section of the line, this connecting loop was expanded with overhead lines in the 1970s , as it simultaneously enables the transition between the two main electrical lines. The electrification was completed on September 20, 1976.

Further branch lines were built, such as the first line of the Wittlager Kreisbahn from Holzhausen-Heddinghausen to Bohmte on August 9, 1900 with a connection to the main line Münster-Osnabrück-Bremen and on January 15, 1910 by opening the connection from Rahden to Nienburg .

The locomotive shed in Rahden subsequently had to be expanded and the locomotive station became a depot. With the steam locomotive 24 041, the first locomotive of this unit type came to Rahden on October 30, 1928, although this series remained loyal to the depot until the end of the steam traction.

The Second World War also left its mark here. On 1st / 2nd In April 1945 the bridge over the Mittelland Canal between Gestringen and Lübbecke was blown up. But from March 1, 1946, continuous traffic was possible again.

From January 1950, express trains from Bremerhaven-Lehe to Frankfurt (Main) via Bremen , Herford , Paderborn , Korbach and Marburg used this route. Such connections were also referred to as " hedge cable pull ".

The last steam train journeys, shuttle journeys between Sulingen and Bünde, took place on 5./6. October 1974.

From December 1, 1977, all stations from Neue Mühle belonged to Rahden, and from April 1, 1978 the Rahden depot was only a branch of Löhne (Westf) . On April 30, 1979, the Rahden railway maintenance facility was dissolved and on January 1, 1989 the Rahden railway station office.

Sulingen station on the last day of operation (June 1, 1994)

On June 1, 1994, the last remaining pair of trains Bielefeld – Bassum – Bremen and thus passenger traffic on the Rahden – Bassum line was discontinued; Freight traffic followed on June 3, 1994 and the line closed on December 31, 1997 (with the exception of the Sulingen – Barenburg section). To this day, DB Cargo Deutschland operates this section of the route from Diepholz via Sulingen to the ExxonMobil warehouse in Barenburg.

Between Sulingen and Schwaförden (March 2012)

In autumn 2009, a railway overpass near Bassum, which was considered a bottleneck in the federal trunk road network, was removed and the embankment was partially removed. At Ströhen, the track was built over with a hall. In the Sulingen area, several level crossings were removed, among other things during the construction of relief roads. The same applies to the level crossing along Bundesstraße 61 near Neuenkirchen. The other sections of the route are now mostly overgrown with undergrowth.

The VCD KV Diepholz is now working intensively with the Rhein-Sieg-Eisenbahn to develop a perspective for the future. In October 2011 a passenger train reached Sulingen again after a long time.

There were plans to create a connecting curve in the Sulingen area between the Diepholzer and Barenburger branches and thus a possibility to bypass the city of Sulingen. According to these plans, the site of the Sulingen train station, which was then no longer in use, with its formerly extensive track system, was to be developed for other purposes. The already existing planning approval decision for the "Südschleife" was canceled by the Federal Administrative Court.

The Westphalian section Bünde-Rahden is now part of the DB regional network Münster-Ostwestfalen (MOW) based in Münster.

Lübbecke station

The route between Rahden and Herford is used every hour by the regional train RB 71 "Ravensberger Bahn" with the crossing in Bad Holzhausen at the symmetry minute : 28 .

The trains continue to Bielefeld Hbf and are connected there as RB 67 “Der Warendorfer” to Münster (Westf) Hbf . A change is only necessary if vehicles are exchanged.

This connection is operated by the eurobahn with Talent diesel railcars at speeds of up to 120 km / h.

The regional train RB 61 also runs between Bünde and Herford. This also continues to Bielefeld. In a Europe-wide tender, the eurobahn was able to secure the operation of this line in the Teutoburg Forest network for 15 years. When the timetable changed in December 2017, the company took over operations from the Westfalenbahn. With the start of operations, the RB 61 line was extended to Hengelo in the Netherlands via its previous endpoint in Bad Bentheim . For this purpose, the company has procured new five-part multi - system multiple units of the Stadler FLIRT type.

Tariffs in public transport

The regional “six tariff” ( Verkehrsverbund OstWestfalenLippe ) applied to all local public transport until July 31, 2017 . The Westphalian tariff has been in effect since August 1, 2017, replacing the "six-person tariff". The NRW tariff is also valid for the entire section of the route. The Lower Saxony tariff including the Lower Saxony ticket also applies between Bünde and Herford .

Freight transport

The short section Sulingen – Barenburg is used today for freight transport by DB Cargo as part of the industrial connection leading from Diepholz to ExxonMobil in Barenburg . In Lübbecke the siding branches off to the company BESTA Eisen- und Stahlhandelsgesellschaft mbH on the Mittelland Canal . This is served in part with wire-reel block trains from Monday to Friday.

Draisine traffic

Today there is a trolley service for tourists between Rahden and Ströhen (Han) . In Ströhen, a former moor railway connects to the trolley service.

future

In its local traffic plan, the Zweckverband Nahverkehr Westfalen-Lippe (NWL) calls for an additional connection switch to be set up in the Hiddenhausen-Schweicheln area. This should allow additional compressor trains to run between the half-hourly cycle trains and improve the operating quality. The northern section between Bünde and Rahden is also to be integrated into an electronic signal box , with level crossings to be technically secured to increase speed. At the Espelkamp and Lübbecke train stations, a check is to be made to determine the conditions under which intersections with corresponding platform edges can be built again.

Efforts are being made to reactivate the line for passenger and freight traffic between Bassum and Rahden. The local "Action Alliance Railway Line Bassum-Bünde eV" is committed to this. The Neue Westfälische reports that the Association of German Transport Companies will put the railway line on its reactivation list.
