Geographical location
Benton is located in northern Kennebec County, bordering Somerset Counties and Waldo Counties . To the west the area is bounded by the Kennebec River . The Sebasticook River , which flows into the Kennebec River, flows through the town in a southerly direction . The surface is flat, without any significant elevations.

history
Benton was organized on March 16, 1842 as an independent town with the name Sebasticook . Benton was previously part of the Town of Clinton. The name was changed to Benton in 1850. The name goes back to the politician Thomas Hart Benton . Parts of the township of Unity were added in 1847 and parts were given to Clinton in 1853. An island in the Kennebec River was given to Fairfield in 1873, and parts of Albion were added in 1863.
With the Benton – Fairfield tram , which was expanded to its full length from 1898 to 1900, Benton had a passenger connection with Fairfield until 1929 and a freight line until 1936. The connection ranged from Benton Falls to the terminus of the Waterville tram and the Fairfield – Shawmut tram in Fairfield.
