In 2011 they won an MTV Europe Music Award for Best Worldwide Act . In 2012 BigBang gave their first concert in the USA and in 2015 they started their big MADE World Tour .

Band history

2000–2006: emergence and first successes

Even before their debut, some band members were active in the entertainment industry. G-Dragon and Taeyang were the first to train under YG Entertainment when they were eleven . After G-Dragon heard of YG Entertainment's plans to start a boy band, he contacted his old friend TOP, who was then active as the rapper Tempo . Seungri made his first television appearance on the series Let's Cokeplay: Mnet Battle Shinhwa , in which Shinhwa was looking for members for a "second Shinwha". Big Bang originally had six members and the development was documented in a television series. In the end only five members remained; Hyun-seung had to leave the group.

Big Bang made his debut at the Olympic Gymnastics Arena on August 19, 2006 during the YG Family 10th Year Concert . Shortly thereafter, Big Bang's first EP, Bigbang , was released, which sold over 40,000 copies.

2007–2008: Successes in South Korea and Japan

Bigbang at MTV Fast Forward in Thailand, December 2007

In early February 2007 Big Bang's first live album The First / Real Live Concert was released, which sold over 30,000 times. Their first Extended Play Always featured some group changes. They worked more on the music and moved into other genres like electronic music . Most of the songs were written and produced by G-Dragon. Reviews have been mostly positive, especially for Lies , who has been described as "through the roof". Lies became Big Bang's first number one hit, selling over 120,000 copies.

Her second EP, Hot Issue , released in the same year, had the same success as its predecessor. The single " Last Farewell " stayed at the top of the juke-on charts for eight weeks, received the song of the month award from Cyworld and sold over 120,000 copies in South Korea alone.

The group suffered from a state of exhaustion and activities were suspended for a short time. The group's immense success led to them receiving several awards, such as the "Best Male Group" and "Song of The Year" awards at the Mnet Asian Music Awards 2007. In early 2008 they received the "Artist of the Year" award at the 17th Seoul Music Awards. By the end of 2007 they earned 12 billion (11.5 million US dollars ).

In late 2007, Big Bang made her debut in Japan with her EP For the World , which debuted at number ten on the Oricon charts . In August 2008, after a break, Big Bang's third Korean EP Stand Up was released , which sold over 200,000 copies. Her single day by day was number one on several sales platforms and was able to hold onto that position for six weeks.

During their Korean releases, Big Bang's first Japanese studio album, Number 1 , was released, which peaked at number three on the Oricon Albums Chart. Her second Korean studio album, Remember , was released in late 2008 and sold over 200,000 copies. At the end of 2008 they received their third Mnet Asia Music Award in the category Artist of the Year.

2009–2011: Solo projects and commercial success

In March 2009 Big Bang released the song "Lollipop" with YG Entertainment's new girl group 2NE1 , which served as an advertisement for LG . In August, the second Japanese studio album Big Bang was released through Universal Music , which was advertised with the singles " My Heaven " and " Gara Gara Go !! "

In early 2010, Big Bang held their "Big Bang Concert Big Show" and then began their "Electric Love Tour" in Japan. Her third Japanese studio album Big Bang 2 with the singles " Koe o Kikasete ", " Tell Me Goodbye " and " Beautiful Hangover " was released in May 2011. "Koe wo Kikasete" was used in the Japanese drama "Ohitorisama (お ひ と り さ ま One Person)". and rose to number four on the Oricon charts . "Tell Me Goodbye" was used in the Korean drama Iris and won "Song of the Year" at the 52nd Japan Record Awards . For the remainder of the year, the members concentrated on their solo projects and GD & T.OP released their debut album of the same name.

After almost two years, Big Bang released their EP Tonight , which sold over 100,000 times in the first week. At the end of 2011, Big Bang prevailed against Britney Spears and Lena Meyer-Landrut , and thus won an MTV Europe Music Award for Best Worldwide Act . This made headlines in the press:

“When names like Lena and Britney Spears appeared at the MTV Europe Music Awards last year , it seemed clear that one of the two would get the award as a“ World Wide Act ”. What few expected was a South Korean band. Big Bang, so their name, drew attention to the new Korean wave ... ”

2012–2014: International recognition, first world tour and break

Big Bang, March 2012

In 2012 Big Bang made their long-awaited comeback, which was initiated with the album "Alive". With "Alive" Big Bang was the first K-Pop band to make it onto the US Billboard 200 . The band then went on a worldwide concert tour. The Alive Galaxy Tour was attended by a total of 800,000 people. The New York Times journalist Jon Caramanica described the band as the "real heart of K-Pop". At the 2012 Italian TRL Awards on the " Piazzale Michelangelo " square in Florence , BigBang won the "Best Fans" award. After the Alive Galaxy Tour , Big Bang started their Japan Dome Tour and their Japan Dome Tour "X" . During their tours, the individual members concentrated again on their solo projects.

2015–2016: MADE , second world tour and 10th anniversary

Big Bang during their Made World Tour, June 2015

After a three-year hiatus, YG Entertainment released a trailer for Big Bangs Made in April 2015 . Four EPs were released from May 1st to August 5th; M , A , D and E . The EPs and the individual singles all made it into the charts. The Made World Tour brought more than 1.5 million people to the concert halls and is the largest tour by a South Korean act. By the end of 2015, Big Bang took 150 billion (120 million US dollars a).

Due to the numerous appearances, the expansion of the Made World Tour , the wish of the band members to produce more songs and the resulting revision, YGE Made postponed until the end of September. The album was ultimately postponed indefinitely. In early December 2015, Big Bang won four awards at the 17th Mnet Asian Music Awards , including their third Artist of the Year award. Several projects have been started to celebrate Big Bang's ten-year anniversary. This started with the documentary Big Bang Made which was released in June 2016. This was followed by the 0.TO.10 concerts at Nagai Stadium in Osaka at the end of July and at the Seoul World Cup Stadium in Seoul at the end of August. Another Japan Dome tour has been announced for December 2016. The tour was attended by 781,500 people in 16 concerts. The third project ran from August 5 to October 30, 2016, the exhibition A TO Z .

After more than a year and a half, MADE was released in December 2016 with the songs already published and three new ones . The three songs sold together over a million times within five days. At the beginning of January 2017, Big Bang ended their 0.TO.10 concert series in Seoul.

Since 2017: conscription

In February 2017, TOP began his 21-month military service as the first member of the group . G-Dragon was drafted in February 2018, Taeyang and Daesung in March, and Seungri will begin his military service in the second half of 2018.
