history

The area gained importance as a settlement for the Ligurians in ancient times . Since the 13th century, the Landi families from Piacenza and Fieschi from Genoa competed for dominance over the Repubblica di Borgo Val di Taro . In 1547 the Fieschi were ousted due to an uprising in Genoa and the Landi were elevated to princes of Val di Taro by Emperor Charles V in 1551 . In 1626 the principality fell to the Doria family from Genoa through marriage . In 1646 they had to hand it over to the Farnese family at pressure from Urban VIII , who incorporated it into their Duchy of Parma .
