Bruce Beutler
Bruce Alan Beutler (born December 29, 1957 in Chicago ) is an American immunologist and geneticist who has carried out decisive research work in the field of immunology , particularly the toll-like receptors , and who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2011 for his achievements .
Life
Beutler was born in Chicago in 1957 as the son of the German emigrant Ernest Beutler . The family then lived in California. Bruce Beutler studied biology at the University of California, San Diego until 1976, followed by a medical degree at the University of Chicago . In 1981 he received his MD. From 1985 to 1986 Beutler was an assistant professor at Rockefeller University . He then held various positions at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute until 2000 . From 2000 to 2007, Beutler was a professor in the Department of Immunology at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla , California . Since 2007 he has headed the genetics department of the Scripps Research Institute. Since September 2011, Beutler has also been Director of the Center for the Genetics of Host Defense at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.
He is the father of three sons.
Act
Since the early 1980s, Beutler initially researched tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and the reaction of the immune system to endotoxins from bacteria (which belong to the LPS ), eventually identifying the long-sought endotoxin receptor (TLR 4), which is one of the Toll -like receptors belonging to the innate immune system. In 1985 he discovered a messenger substance from macrophages with which they react to inflammation and which he called cachectin. Shortly afterwards, he identified this with the then just discovered TNF. He recognized the possibility of using antibodies against TNF to combat septic shock caused by endotoxins in bacterial infections . His discovery of the role of TNF in inflammation is also the basis of corresponding drug developments for various autoimmune diseases.
In 2011 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine together with Jules Hoffmann and Ralph M. Steinman . Beutler's and Hoffmann's discoveries about the activation of innate immunity were recognized.
