history

The place Beidl is first mentioned in 1143 in a document from Diepold III. called, which is attested by the parish priest Parrochianus de phidele . The local nobleman Adelbertus de Bidil is mentioned once as a witness in 1163 in a document from Friedrich von Parkstein . In 1179 Vdalrichus de peidele et frater eius Adalbertus are mentioned as witnesses to a document from Regensburg Bishop Otto von Riedenburg when a tithe was donated to the Waldsassen monastery . In 1259 the Staufer Konradin donated this village together with Wondreb and Gründelbach to the Waldsassen monastery; Beidl was therefore a royal estate that belonged to the regio egere . A Nyclas, pastor of Preydel , is mentioned in 1352 when the village of Albernhof des Ulreich der Kagrer was bought from the Leukenberg (= Leuchtenberg). In 1379 Ulrich the Chleispentaler , sitting on the Freienstein , is mentioned. In 1384 Leo Chleispentaler zu Peyde was named, a judge and caretaker from Waldsassen, who lived in this castle as the seat of the court. In 1386 Selina , Pfleger zum Störnstein sold his free inheritance to the Freyenstein pei Peidl to the Waldsassen monastery. In 1402 Abbot Konbrad I had the castle demolished by his subjects, as alleged robbers were staying there. The approval of Emperor Siegmund of Luxembourg had to be obtained for this, which underlines the status of the castle as a royal property.

In the 17th century, the castle, which was built around 1163 and destroyed in 1402, was finally demolished and the dam of the Krausenteich formed from its remains. In 1723 there is still talk of rubble and rubble from walls .

Freienstein Castle today

The Burgstall is located 210 m northeast of the parish church of Beidl and south of the Krausenhof (Leichauer Straße 6). A six meter high granite spur has been preserved, which protrudes into the valley of the Beidlbach. On the higher surface there was probably a rectangular solid house . One meter wide foundations made of large field stones were excavated in 1976. The castle hill was surrounded by a moat filled with water , from which two ponds (filled in 1920 and 1968) were preserved. Between these ponds and the foot of the hill was the remainder of a circular wall built from roughly hewn granite stones until 1968 . East is the Krausenhof, formerly Freyenstein called Grange Castle. Ceramic finds (shards with a wave pattern) confirm that the castle was dated to the 10th to 12th centuries, unglazed stove tiles that were found can be dated to the 14th century.
