The Burhanpur district ( Hindi बुरहानपुर ज़िला ) is a district in the Nimar region of the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh . The administrative center is the city of Burhanpur with a population of around 220,000 .

geography

The Burhanpur district is located south of the Satpura Mountains ; it is traversed from northeast to southwest by the Tapti River, which flows into the Arabian Sea . Neighboring districts are the Khargone district in the northwest, the Khandwa district in the north, the Amravati (Mah.) District in the southeast, the Buldhana district (Mah.) In the south and the Jalgaon district (Mah.) In the southwest .

The average altitude of the district is between 250 (on the Tapti River) and 450  m ; the highest point is in the Satpura Mountains and is around 715  m . The average annual rainfall is around 812 mm, but around 85% of this falls during the summer monsoon season .

Administrative division

The Burhanpur District is divided into only three administrative districts ( Tehsils or Subdivisions ): Burhanpur, Khaknar and Nepanagar. It consists of around 260 villages, the city of Burhanpur, two smaller cities - Nepanagar (approx. 40,000 inhabitants) and Shahpur (approx. 20,000 inhabitants) as well as approx. 260 smaller and larger villages.

Hindus dominate the rural villages (around 90%); There is also a not inconsiderable number of Muslims in the cities (around 20%). In the decade between 2001 and 2011, the population grew by almost 20% to around 760,000, with the male population exceeding that of the female population by around 5%. About 65% of the population lives in rural villages; on average around 45% of people (significantly more in rural areas) are illiterate. Mostly Hindi is spoken and the local dialect Nimadi is spoken .

Despite the high proportion of urban population, the Burhanpur district is still largely agricultural; only in the city of Burhanpur there are smaller industrial companies. The district has a total of five train stations on the Khandwa - Jalgaon line .

The region around Burhanpur belonged to the 4th / 5th centuries. Century to the Gupta Empire , which was later replaced by the kings of the Kalachuri dynasty. In the High Middle Ages, the Gond rulers took power; However, from 1577 they came under the political and cultural influence of the Mughal Empire under Akbar I. After that, the region came under the influence of the Marathas in the 17th and 18th centuries ; since the middle of the 19th century the area was under British control. After India's independence (1947), the region belonged to the Central Provinces , from which the state of Madhya Pradesh emerged in 1950; Burhanpur District was created with effect from August 15, 2003 by splitting off from Khandwa District .

Attractions

The Burhanpur district, which is hardly developed for tourism, has only a few sights; The city of Burhanpur itself is the most interesting. The ruins of the Asirgarh Fort in the Satpura Mountains , located approx. 20 km to the northeast, are also worth a visit.
