Daniel Van Buyten (born February 7, 1978 in Chimay ) is a former Belgian football player .
Club career
Van Buyten is the son of a Belgian professional catcher and a German. He started playing soccer in the offspring of JS Froidchapelle . During a one-year stay with his grandmother in Bad Salzdetfurth , Lower Saxony , he played for JSG Lammetal (youth game community SV Eintracht Bad Salzdetfurth , VfB Bodenburg and SV Wehrstedt 65 ). He then returned to JS Froidchapelle and then played for Olympic Charleroi . His next two positions were UBS Auvelais and FC Somzée . He played as a striker at all clubs .
In 1997 Daniel Van Buyten signed his first professional football contract with Sporting Charleroi . Although he was intended for the attack, he then played as a defender. In 1999 Daniel Van Buyten moved to Standard Liège . With his achievements, he also aroused the interest of foreign clubs and moved to Olympique Marseille for eleven million euros . In his second season he scored six goals as a central defender and was voted Ligue 1's best defender . During the winter break of the 2003/04 season, Van Buyten moved to Manchester City on loan for half a year . There he made his debut on February 8, 2004 (24th matchday) in the Premier League against Birmingham City . As a result, however, he only came to four more missions because of a torn muscle fiber and a red card suspension. The game against Leeds United on Matchday 29 - he was sent off in the 75th minute - was his last game for City.
In the 2004/05 season , Daniel Van Buyten moved from Olympique Marseille to Bundesliga club Hamburger SV for a transfer fee of 3.8 million euros . He played his first game for HSV as team captain on August 7, 2004 (1st matchday) in the 2-0 defeat by Bayern Munich . In his first season for HSV, he played 34 Bundesliga games and scored five goals. About the UEFA Intertoto Cup 2005 , the club then managed to qualify for the UEFA Cup 2005/06 , in which Van Buyten was used in all ten games and scored two goals. In the following season 2005/06 Van Buyten came meanwhile to 27 appearances and scored two goals. At the end of the season, HSV was in third place in the table, which means they reached the qualifying round for the Champions League.
From the 2006/07 season , Van Buyten played for FC Bayern Munich . Coach Ottmar Hitzfeld relied on the central defenders Lúcio and Martín Demichelis in the 2007/08 season , so Van Buyten was rarely used. In the 2008/09 season he achieved a regular place in the back three next to Demichelis and Lúcio of defense. In the 2009/10 season, Van Buyten fought for a regular place in central defense under the new coach Louis van Gaal and extended his contract term early on February 4, 2010 until summer 2012. In the 2: 3 defeat on November 27, 2011 at 1 FSV Mainz 05 van Buyten scored two goals in a first division game for the first time in his career.
On April 30, 2012 he extended his contract, which expired at the end of the season, by one year to June 30, 2013, and in June 2013 again for another year. He won the Champions League with Bayern in the 2012/13 season , in which he played six games despite criticism regarding his age and great competition in his position. Among other things, he played in the knockout phase against Juventus Turin and FC Barcelona , albeit initially favored by a red card suspension Jérôme Boateng . After Eric Gerets (PSV Eindhoven, 1988), he was only the second Belgian to win the most important trophy in European football.
Van Buyten won his fourth double with Bayern in the 2013/14 season . He played about the same number of games in the Bundesliga (12) as in the previous season, in the cup final against Borussia Dortmund he was substituted on for Pierre-Emile Højbjerg in extra time. His contract with FC Bayern, which expired on June 30, 2014, was not renewed and he announced his retirement on August 14.
National team
On February 28, 2001 Daniel Van Buyten made his debut for the Belgian national team in a 10-1 win over San Marino and was in the starting line-up. After his second game on March 24, 2001 in the World Cup qualifier against Scotland , in which he scored a goal, it was several months before his next international match. On February 13, 2002 Van Buyten was finally mobilized in the 1-0 win in Brussels King Baudouin Stadium against Norway in the starting lineup and was included in the Belgian squad for the 2002 World Cup after the following games . Van Buyten was used in all four games and also played through them. On October 11, 2003 he made his last game for the national team in the qualifying game for the 2004 European Football Championship against Estonia . In the following years he lost his regular place in the national team to Vincent Kompany because of an injury . On August 18, 2004, he returned to the national team when he came on in the 66th minute for Kompany in the 2-2 draw in Oslo against Norway. Since then he has belonged again to the tribe of the Belgian national team.
At the 2014 World Cup , Daniel Van Buyten was on the starting line-up in every game. Belgium reached the quarter-finals and lost to Argentina after a 0-1.
