Calvi dell'Umbria is an Italian commune with 1765 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Terni in the Umbria region .

The community extends over around 46  km² . It is located about 100 km south of the regional capital Perugia and about 25 km south of the provincial capital Terni in the climatic classification of Italian communities in Zone D, 2095 GR / G. It is the southernmost municipality in the province of Terni and therefore also the southernmost municipality in Umbria.

The districts include Poggiolo (325 m, approx. 40 inhabitants) and Santa Maria della Neve (262 m, approx. 100 inhabitants).

The neighboring municipalities are Configni ( RI ), Gallese ( VT ), Magliano Sabina (RI), Montebuono (RI), Narni , Otricoli , Stroncone , Torri in Sabina (RI) and Vacone (RI).

history

The place was already inhabited in the Bronze Age. The Romans then formed settlements under the name Carbium , but the place did not develop further until the High Middle Ages . Calvi was first mentioned in writing in 1036 under the name Fundus Carbinianus . In the 11th century, the place was under the monastery Farfa from Fara in Sabina . In the 13th century Calvi came under the rule of Narni, then the place free commune in was Papal States , the Calvi as a fief to Orsini , later the Anguillara over turned. From the 12th century to 1860 the castle of the village belonged to the diocese of Narni . The place is mainly known for its nativity scenes, the oldest is in the church of Sant'Antonio and contains thirty ceramic figures from the 16th century by the brothers Massimo and Raffaele da Montereale.

  • Chiesa della Santissima Trinità , church in the town center, which was built in 1523 by Rinaldo Iacovetti da Calvi.
  • Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta , former parish church in the town center near Porta Ternana. Originated in the 13th century and expanded between 1620 and 1650. The high altar contains the canvas painting Madonna Assunta e San Pancrazio by Salvatore Pierella from 1737. Other works in the church are the paintings Circonsione di Gesù by Calisto Calisti di Bagnaia (painted 1640) and Sposalizio della Vergine by Vincenzo Manenti.
  • Chiesa di San Francesco , church from the 13th century.
  • Chiesa di Sant'Antonio e Santa Brigida , church in the center and building by Ferdinando Fuga . Made between 1739 and 1743.
  • Palazzo Ferrini , palace built in 1606 adjacent to the monastery. Today it has the museum's Pinakothek on the first floor .
  • Monastero delle Suore Orsoline , monastery built by Ferdinando Fuga in 1743 . Today it is home to the Museo del Monastero delle Orsoline .
