Christian Thomsen (physicist)
Christian Thomsen (born July 22, 1959 in Bern ) is a German physicist , university professor and President of the Technical University of Berlin since April 1, 2014 .
Life
Thomsen completed a Studium generale at the Leibniz Kolleg in Tübingen from 1978 to 1979 , then studied at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen , where he completed his intermediate diploma in 1981 , and then at Brown University in Providence , Rhode Island , where he obtained a Ph. D. PhD in physics .
In 1991 he completed his habilitation at the Technical University of Munich . Since 1994 he has been teaching at the Technical University of Berlin at the Institute for Solid State Physics. From 1997 to 1999 he was Vice President for Teaching and Studies. From 2003 to 2014 he was Dean of Faculty II - Mathematics and Natural Science. On January 8, 2014, he was elected 9th President of the TU Berlin (effective April 1, 2014). He has been a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering ( acatech ) since 2016 .
In 1991 he received the Walter Schottky Prize of the German Physical Society .
public perception
As President of the TU Berlin, Christian Thomsen publicly showed his solidarity several times with the demands of Fridays for Future and Scientists for Future :
“The Fridays for Future movement is right, it is important, it is important for our future. [...] Many students and scientists are getting involved, and the university management of the TU Berlin joins the demands of the Fridays for Future movement. [...] Science, politics, business and civil society must now act together. "
He called for an active role of science in communicating its research results, increased transdisciplinary discourse and initiative on the part of researchers.
As an author, he wrote textbooks in the For Dummies series , which is intended to facilitate entry into primarily technical topics.
