GDR railway cycling championships 1984

The GDR championship in track cycling was held for the 36th time in 1984 and took place from June 7th to 9th on the Alfred-Rosch-Kampfbahn in Leipzig .

The Cottbus sprinter Lutz Heßlich successfully defended the men’s title and the SC Karl-Marx-Stadt quartet in the team pursuit . Maic Malchow secured his second title after 1981 in the 1000 m time trial . All other winners came to their first championship honors.

In the women's category, Christa Rothenburger built on her successes from 1980 to 1982 with her double success in the sprint and in the 500 m time trial.

The title in two-man team driving was only determined on October 13th at the Cottbus cycling track .

The GDR Winter Railway Championships were held for the 9th time in 1984 and traditionally took place from January 5th to 7th in the Werner-Seelenbinder-Halle in East Berlin .

At the championships, no winner from last year was successful again, and new track records were set on all three time trial courses.

The reigning world champion Lutz Heßlich secured his sixth title and third in a row against the strong Karl-Marx-Stadter winter track master Michael Huebner and the Berlin Ralf-Guido Kuschy .

1000 m time trial

In difficult external conditions, twelve time trialists ran the 1000 m distance. Maic Malchow from Leipzig (Junior World Champion from 1980) secured his second championship title after 1981 . He relegated the reigning winter railway master Andreas Ganske and the Cottbuser Detlef Uibel to their places. The five-time world champion Lothar Thoms came in a respectable fifth place after injuries and necessary operations.

In the absence of defending champion Bernd Dittert , Karl-Marx-Städter Mario Hernig won his first title in the single pursuit. He relegated his club mate and best of qualification Harald Wolf and the BSG driver Wolfgang Lötzsch to their places.

4000 m team pursuit

After the best time in the qualification, the Karl-Marx-Städter confidently defended their title from the previous year. They defeated SC Dynamo Berlin in the semi-finals and relegated SC Turbine Erfurt to second place in the final . The quartet from Karl-Marx-Stadt thus made the title hat trick perfect with the same cast .

The experienced Dieter Stein was only able to outrun the young Carsten Wolf in the third from last stand and won his first title in this discipline.

The new GDR champion in the stand-up race was the 27-year-old Karl Marx townsperson Jörg Flohrer . He relegated defending champion Günter Gottlieb to second place, who was deprived of the chance to win his sixth championship in a row because of a faulty pacemaker engine.

The last title of the year and also the last one in the two-man team cycling in the history of GDR track cycling was won by last year's runners-up, Axel Grosser and Jens Wittek from Leipzig.

Winter track championships

Michael Huebner , a Karl Marx townsperson, secured his first sprint title at the winter track championships. In the final, he prevailed with two wins each against Ralf-Guido Kuschy and Christian Drescher . This constellation in the final resulted from the absence of the six-time title holder Lutz Heßlich in the semi-finals, who suffered a concussion in a fall in the quarter-finals .

The 19-year-old Berlin-based Andreas Ganske (Junior World Champion from 1982) secured the championship title from defending champions Maic Malchow and Emanuel Raasch . He improved the six-year-old track record of the multiple world champion Lothar Thoms by 0.72 s.

In the qualification, which was contested by 72 starters, Mario Hernig from Karl Marx City achieved a new track record of 4: 51.20 minutes. He improved this again in the quarterfinals to 4: 47.76 minutes. In the semifinals, however, he had to admit defeat to the reigning road world champion Uwe Raab , who then won the title in the final against his club-mate Uwe Ampler .

In the qualification, the four-man from SC Karl-Marx-Stadt set a new track record with 4: 34.03 minutes. However, they lost this in the final to the quartet from Frankfurt / O. who won with 4: 31.77 minutes.
