Daniel Brélaz (born January 4, 1950 in Lausanne ; resident in Lutry ) is a Swiss politician ( Greens ).

biography

Brélaz got into politics early. After completing his mathematics studies in 1975 at the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne , he worked as a mathematics teacher at the Groupement pour la protection de l'environnement alongside his political commitment . In 1978 he made the leap into the Cantonal Parliament of Vaud , and in 1979 he was elected to a national parliament - as the world's first green man. Until 1989 he was active in the National Council. From 1982 to 1983 he was again represented in the Cantonal Parliament of Vaud.

1989 was elected to the Lausanne city council (executive). Finally, in 2001 he was elected Lausanne City President (Syndic) and in 2006 he was re-elected in the first ballot. At the same time he held the post of city finance director. In 2016 he resigned as mayor.

From 2007 to 2011 he sat again in the National Council. After a break, he has been back in the National Council since 2015. After successful re-election in 2019, he announced that he would step down in March 2022. His designated successor is Raphaël Mahaim , member of the Cantonal Parliament of Vaud .

Daniel Brélaz is married and has one son. In western Switzerland it is often referred to as "géant vert", the "green giant" because of its size and weight. He often wears a cat tie as a trademark.
