The MoMA in Berlin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The MoMA in Berlin was a blockbuster exhibition that took place from February 20 to September 19, 2004 in the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin . 212 works from the New York Museum of Modern Art (MoMA for short), which was being rebuilt in the meantime, were shown. Among them were top-class paintings and sculptures by artists such as Max Beckmann , Constantin Brâncuși , Paul Cézanne , Marcel Duchamp , Roy Lichtenstein , Henri Matisse , Pablo Picasso andJackson Pollock . With them, among other things, modern art was represented in the exhibition, starting with Impressionism up to the present day. The MoMa in Berlin recorded a total of around 1.2 million visitors, making it one of the most successful exhibitions in Germany. The great interest was also due to the marketing strategy of the organizers and led to long queues, which themselves became the focus of reporting, and extended opening hours.

preparation and execution

The exhibition Das MoMa in Berlin was conceived by John Elderfield , who worked at the Museum of Modern Art and selected the works of art on display . In addition, employees of the New York Museum also wrote the articles in the exhibition catalog. Before the exhibition was presented in Berlin, it stopped in Houston , where it was presented at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston from September 21, 2003 to January 4, 2004 under the title The Heroic Century: The Museum of Modern Art Masterpieces, 200 Paintings and Sculptures .

insurance

Because of the immeasurable value of the exhibits, they could not be insured by the Neue Nationalgalerie or its sponsor, the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation . The Federal Republic of Germany has therefore assumed liability .

In order to keep the risk of losing the works of art during the transfer as low as possible, the works of art were distributed over several transports by plane.

marketing

The exhibition is also referred to as an example of new approaches in cultural marketing : A brand campaign, as it has been common in the consumer goods sector up to now, attracted a lot of public attention. The long lines of queuing visitors quickly became a central topic of the reporting. During the exhibition, over 2,400 national and 500 international press articles reported on the exhibition and campaign. Since then people have been talking about the so-called "MoMA effect" in the media. The MetaDesign agency designed the corporate design for the exhibition and developed the campaign together with the Association of Friends of the National Gallery .

Audience interest

The exhibition Das MoMa in Berlin attracted a total of around 1.2 million visitors, which means an average of 6500 visitors per day. The highest number of visitors on one day was recorded on August 28, 2004 with 11,800. On June 4th, 2004 the number of 500,000 visitors was exceeded, on July 7th the number of 700,000 expected in advance was reached. During the course of the exhibition, the organizers sold 177,000 VIP tickets, and there were also 8,500 group events. Of the visitors, 30 percent came from Berlin itself, while 70 percent were foreign guests. The three countries and regions from which most of the foreign visitors came were Italy , France and Scandinavia . Berlin benefited significantly from the exhibition, as 40 percent of the non-residents in the summer and even 70 percent in September stated that they had only traveled to Berlin because of them.

The great public interest led to long waiting times and extended opening times. The queue with visitors waiting to be admitted turned into a kind of happening that was also received by the media and attracted new visitors.

Visitors had to put up with the shortest waiting time on Easter Sunday, when 9,000 people waited an average of 45 minutes for entry into the New National Gallery. The longest was on August 28, 2004 when visitors sometimes had to wait twelve hours. The average length of stay in the exhibition was then two to three hours.

reporting

The MoMa in Berlin was accompanied by a great deal of media coverage. In total, over 3600 newspaper articles dealt with the exhibition. 2400 came from the national, 700 from the Berlin and 500 from the international press.
