action

The sixteen-year-old Hazel Grace Lancester suffering from thyroid cancer with metastases in the lungs and is sent by her parents to a support group. There she meets Augustus "Gus" Waters, a former athlete who has lost a leg to bone cancer and who is extremely attractive to Hazel. The two youths also share a biting gallows humor, but Hazel is afraid of being attached because of her illness. Augustus' fear is to be forgotten after he dies. Gus gives Hazel his sponsored fairy wish and the two fly to Amsterdam with Hazel's mother to visit Hazel's favorite author Peter van Houten.

After Augustus Hazel confessed his love over dinner, the visit to van Houten turns out to be a failure. Together with his assistant, they visit the Anne Frank House . There Hazel realizes she loves Gus and they kiss. When they got back to the hotel, they slept together. On the day of the return flight, Gus tells Hazel that his cancer had returned worse than before. After returning to the USA, Gus begins therapy, but the chances of success are viewed as low. One evening Gus calls Hazel in a panic and asks her to come and see him at a gas station. His condition has deteriorated so much that Hazel calls an ambulance against Gus' request. After the hospitalization, Gus visits Hazel in a wheelchair and asks her to write an eulogy for him. Gus holds a pre-funeral at which Isaac, Gus' best friend, who has gone blind from cancer, and Hazel deliver their eulogies so Gus can hear them.

Gus dies eight days after the pre-funeral. Hazel gives another speech at his funeral, realizing that it is no longer a matter of honoring the deceased, but of comforting the mourning. Peter van Houten came specially at Gus's request: He wanted Hazel to get answers to her questions about her favorite book. This is also about a person who dies of cancer, and she wants to know what happens to the other people in the book after that. She wants to empathize with how her own parents will feel after her death. Van Houten gives Hazel a letter, but she doesn't want to talk to him. During a conversation with Isaac, the latter tells her that it is Gus' funeral speech for her funeral. Hazel reads it, and the film ends with her lying in the meadow, just like at the beginning.
