Death Race is an American science fiction - action thriller from the year 2008 . Directed by Paul WS Anderson , who also wrote the script and co-produced the film. It's kind of a remake of the film Frankenstein's Death Race, starring Sylvester Stallone and David Carradine .

action

The action takes place in 2012, the US economy has collapsed and unemployment is rising, as is the crime rate , so that companies run prisons. Jensen Ames, a former racing driver, works as a steel worker, but the company is bankrupt and has to close. Jensen comes home after his workday, is robbed and drugged at his house, and wakes up with a bloody knife in his hand that is said to have killed his wife.

Jensen is relocated to Terminal Island Jail , where Headmistress Hennessey races armed cars. There he is also mistreated by the sadistic guard Ulrich - who is also Hennessey's assistant. The main prize of the races is the release papers from prison for winning five Death Races , which are broadcast live on pay TV. Hennessey forces Ames to participate by threatening to tell his daughter about the alleged murder. He drives as the star Frankenstein, who died in the operating room after his last race and was wearing a mask. Like every driver, he gets a co-driver, Case, from the women's prison to help him operate his weapons.

The Death Race consists of three stages with three laps each. At the end of the first stage, Ames recognizes one of his opponents, Pachenko, as the murderer of his wife. In the second stage, Ames is the last to go to confront Case. She admits that Hennessey will sign her release if she sabotaged Frankenstein's car. Ames kills Pachenko in the same stage by breaking his neck. Hennessey then uses a converted truck as a "battleship" with a variety of weapons attached, such as. B. machine guns, flamethrowers, a kind of carpet made of crow's feet that hold a car so that it can be destroyed by the tank cannon that is also attached, and blades attached to the wheels that destroy nearby cars or kill their (co) drivers. Only Ames and Machine Gun Joe survive and destroy the truck.

Before the third stage, Ulrich puts a bomb on Ames' car to prevent him from winning. Ames goes to Joe to tell him that Frankenstein wants to talk to him. During the last stage it looks like Ames and Joe are fighting, but in truth they have agreed beforehand and destroy the perimeter of the racetrack in order to flee the island over the bridge. Hennessey tries to destroy Ames with the remote control of the bomb, but the bomb was removed by Coach. Shortly afterwards, Hennessey can be seen being congratulated on the ratings for the race and receiving a present for it. This gift, however, is the bomb that was previously attached to Ames' car. Coach presses the button on the remote control, so Hennessey and Ulrich are killed. Ames and Joe leave for Mexico, but before that Ames takes his daughter to live with them. Six months later, Ames and Joe are seen working as auto mechanics in a junkyard, and they receive a visit from Case.

Reviews

Wesley Lovell wrote on oscarguy.com that neither the poster nor the trailer offer anything that could induce fans of the original film Frankenstein's death race to watch the remake. The film is worth neither time nor money.

The German picture, however, described the film as a firework of action with "the best car chases of the year".

The film magazine Cinema says about the film: “ Death Race is like Speed Racer without the brightly colored colors. Blood, sweat and testosterone flow in abundance, the dialogues would fit on two or three beer mats, the action scenes are wild and crazy, if a little tiring in the long run. Genre lovers will still appreciate the obscure crash trash, because in its classic B-movie aesthetic it remains unconditionally consistent until the end. Quentin Tarantino's Grindhouse Cinema sends his regards, the brakes will take place later! Conclusion: Futuristic racing driver action in a consistently continuous B-movie style: gaudy, loud and bloody "
