Digital library (product)

This article deals with the product digital library as a CD-ROM series of digital texts.

The digital library is a series of digital text editions published between 1997 and 2007 by Directmedia Publishing in the form of CD and DVD-ROMs .

Origin and general

Initially, the series only specialized in humanities texts; the first volumes contained public domain texts from prose and poetry from the Enlightenment to the beginning of Expressionism and philosophical texts from antiquity to Nietzsche . Only in the course of the years were other text genres added: For example, old, meanwhile also public domain encyclopedias such as Brockhaus' little conversation encyclopedia , but also reference works still subject to copyright, were published. Some, albeit more expensive, editions also contain facsimiles of the underlying book editions.

Both the motto of the series, "CD-ROMs for people who read books" , as well as statements in various prefaces of individual volumes show that the digital library is not intended to replace the respective book editions or books in general. Rather, research and development aids should be made available that are only made possible through the use of the computer. For this reason, it provided that in a band around the digital edition of a book edition is, each one Sigel attached list and usually a verbatim pages concordance , thus ensuring the citation.

Many volumes are also available to download for a fee. You then receive a data package that can be opened with the library software and which can otherwise be handled like the CD-ROM version.

The digital library series has been discontinued since 2007. The subsequent volumes are called zeno.org and contain both new publications and editions out of print in the previous series. Another series called the Kleine Digitale Bibliothek has been available since autumn 2007 .

Reading software

To view the volumes, the free but proprietary software Digibib is required, which is available for Microsoft Windows (95 through Windows 10). In addition to the free version 4.01.350, which, among other things, enables research in the directory, full text or people in individual volumes or in the entire inventory, a paid version 5.0 is also available. It differs from the previous version in the ability to export selected extracts for various electronic reading devices ( e-books ). In addition, PDFs and editable text files can be generated (e.g. DOC, TXT, RTF). Furthermore, with the help of the digital library 5, the content of the works can be placed on a domestic server so that the entire database can be accessed from outside using a laptop or smartphone .

The Windows version can be run under Linux using WINE . For Mac OS X there is the so-called MacDigibib , whose version 2.1 (as of January 2008) has only rudimentary functions in addition to undocumented library management.
