The 2009/10 season of the Austrian national ice hockey league will be played with seven teams. The field of participants was only determined after lengthy negotiations and several changes of mode. The defending champion was the EHC Lustenau , who, however, was eliminated in the quarter-finals after mixed performances. The new champion was EC hagn_leone Dornbirn , who prevailed in the final against Bundesliga relegated HC Innsbruck .

Financial problems in the field of participants

The EK Zell am See reported massive financial problems in the early summer of 2009 and could not give a binding participation for the confirmation in the new national league season. A little later it became known that the KSV ice hockey club was also threatened with bankruptcy and that it was therefore also unable to participate in the season with certainty. The EV Zeltweg then considered relegating voluntarily to the upper league if the two clubs were to be canceled, since in an emergency many games against local opponents and thus many spectators would be lost. ATSE Graz and EHC Bregenzerwald also announced that they wanted to wait and see whether a meaningful league operation could be secured. Following these reports, models were discussed according to which - similar to the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga - foreign teams could fill the field. However, this met with a predominantly negative response from the other teams. At a league meeting at the beginning of July 2009, the EV Zeltweg confirmed, despite the bankruptcy of the teams from Zell am See and Kapfenberg, that it was going to participate in the coming season, so that it should again be played with eight teams. In the meantime EK Zeller Eisbären was founded as the successor to EK Zell am See, which had gone bankrupt. The club officials asked the Austrian ice hockey association for an opportunity to participate in the league, which the latter also confirmed. This procedure, in which the previously made decision of the league had been ignored, aroused severe criticism, so that some teams withdrew their nominations in protest. After it was unclear for a long time whether there would be a season at all, an agreement was finally reached in mid-July on a field of seven teams including the Zeller Eisbären. However, EV Zeltweg and ATSE Graz will compete in the major league.

mode

Due to the uncertainties in the field of participants, the mode was revised several times over the summer. The current mode provides for a triple round trip, whereby the points are halved after two rounds. Half points are rounded up. After a total of 36 games, the two best teams have qualified for the semi-finals, and the club that placed last is eliminated.

In a playoff qualification, the teams in places three to six in a best-of-three series then play out the remaining two semi-final participants, with the third placed against the sixth and the fourth against the fifth.

The playoffs, consisting of semi-finals and finals, are played in the best-of-five mode. A special feature is provided by a rule that is also used in American professional leagues: if a championship decisive game is tied after regular playing time, after the ice has been cleared, a 20-minute extra time is played, which ends with a sudden victory . If no goal is scored, a further extension of 20 minutes is estimated after the ice has been cleaned again. This procedure is repeated until a goal is scored.

Basic round

The basic round started on September 19, 2009, whereby the EHC Bregenzerwald was the first team to take a break due to the odd number of teams and was only able to celebrate its premiere a week later. In the following period, the forests remained in the first first half of the season without winning points. In the meantime, EC Red Bull Salzburg took the lead just ahead of newcomer HC Innsbruck, while defending champion EHC Lustenau was in the middle of the table with just three wins from six games. The newly founded Zeller Eisbären had a clear lead over Bregenzerwald with seven points, but this could not hide their moderate performance with only two wins.

By the end of the first of the three rounds, Salzburg had consolidated their position at the top. The EHC Lustenau was able to position itself as the new first pursuer in second place, while Bregenzerwald still had no victory to book after a third of the basic round, so the race for the top six seemed to be decided prematurely. In the meantime, however, the VEU Feldkirch started a chase from the bottom third of the table and was able to secure the top of the table until half-time, equal on points with the Salzburgers due to the better direct relationship. HC Innsbruck and EHC Lustenau were only one and two points behind in third and fourth place. Behind that, however, there was already a larger gap. The EC Dornbirn was already nine points behind the top of the table, while the newly founded Zeller Eisbären could not quite find their form and with only 17 points were already 19 points behind to first place.

After twenty-four completed games (two of the three rounds) the points were divided, whereby the places one to five moved back together up to five points. The Zeller (eleven points, nine points behind fifth place) had practically secured sixth place at this point, as Bregenzerwald was lagging behind with only two points in last place. HC Innsbruck finally found an excellent form in the final phase, which was also based on the performance of Seamus Kotyk in goal, who had previously been the goalkeeper of the Tyroleans in the Bundesliga and had rejoined the team during the current season. EC Dornbirn had also strengthened itself, having signed two Bundesliga players with Hannes Enzenhofer (goal, EC KAC ) and Tino Anton Teppert (defense, Vienna Capitals ). The two teams secured the first two places without any problems and were thus set for the semi-finals.

EHC Lustenau, on the other hand, did not match the previous year's form, who repeatedly lost important games just before the end on their own ice and had to accept a 0:10 debacle against Dornbirn. Fifth place was an extremely bad result for the otherwise very successful Vorarlberg team, which was underlined by the large gap to fourth place. Feldkirch and the EC Red Bull Salzburg farm team confidently secured third and fourth place. For the EHC Bregenzerwald, however, the championship came to an early end again. With only five wins from 36 games and a goal difference of -105, the team kept the last place.

Playoffs

Quarter finals

The teams in ranks three to six played the remaining two playoff participants in a best of three series. In both cases, the better-placed team clearly prevailed with 2-0 wins. Surprisingly, the reigning champion EHC Lustenau was also removed from the competition. Vorarlberg had struggled with problems since the end of the regular season and had to admit defeat in both games. The Zeller Eisbären also ended the mixed season early with two defeats and a goal difference of 5:13.

Semifinals

The semi-finals began on March 6, 2010. Both HC Innsbruck and EC Dornbirn made it to the final with a sweep and dominated the defeated opponents over long distances. While VEU Feldkirch was only able to design its home game openly, the Salzburg farm team challenged EC Dornbirn a little more in the first two games and lost only one goal difference. The decisive third encounters of both series, however, ultimately went quite clearly in favor of the favorites.

final

The final began on March 24th, 2010. Favorite HC Innsbruck already had difficulties with the challenger from Vorarlberg in the first encounter on their own ice and finally lost just after extra time. For its part, Dornbirn was able to extend the lead in the second game and only suffered a narrow defeat in the third encounter in Innsbruck. In the end, however, the team won the fourth game with 5: 1 and thus secured the second title in the club's history after the championship in 2008 .

Trivia

  • The game between EHC Bregenzerwald and HC Innsbruck on November 14th, 2009 turned out to be a curiosity of a special kind: the home of the forests, the Arena Alberschwende is the only arena for Austrian professional and semi-professional ice hockey in Austria that is not covered. Shortly after the 2: 3 in the middle section, it began to rain heavily, which is why the referee had to stop the game. It was decided to play the match in the Rheinhalle in Lustenau to the end, which resulted in an interruption of more than an hour. The winner of the match was HC Innsbruck.
