As in the previous season , the ice hockey regional league 1977/78 was played in three regional groups South, North and West. TuS Geretsried became master . In addition to Geretsried, GSV Moers and EV Bad Wörishofen got out of the league.

mode

The mode was almost the same as last year. As in the previous year, a preliminary round with 10 teams was held as a single round in Group South. Then the first six of the preliminary round played a final round, the last four of the preliminary round a relegation round, each taking the points from the preliminary round.

The groups North and West initially played a single round. The first of the North Group and the first two of the West Group then played a qualifying round for the Oberliga Nord with the last six of the Oberliga Nord.

The SC Altenau withdrew his team before the season. The EC Nordhorn and the Bielefelder RSC were regrouped in the West group.

Attendees

WSV Braunlage and ERC Ludwigshafen were promoted to the top league. The Berliner SC had withdrawn their 1b team before the start of the season. Bielefeld and Nordhorn were regrouped from the north group to the west.

The SC Reichersbeuern and the VfL Waldkraiburg withdrew voluntarily from the regional league after the season, Waldkraiburg in the Bayernliga (artificial ice), Reichersbeuern in the Bayernliga (natural ice).
