El Chapo is an American crime series by Silvana Aguirre and Carlos Contreras from 2017. The series is a co-production of the Spanish-language television channel Univision and the video-on-demand provider Netflix . It deals with the life of El Chapo , a Mexican drug lord. The main role of El Chapo plays Marco de la O .

The series tells the story of Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán's rise in the Guadalajara cartel in the 1980s . Initially he was in the service of drug lord Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo and built his first tunnel of his own through which he could illegally smuggle drugs across the border. El Chapo bypasses Amado Carrillo Fuentes , who is in charge of cocaine deals with the Colombian Medellín cartel , in order to negotiate his own deal with Pablo Escobar . After Miguel Ángel and Amado are arrested, Miguel’s sphere of influence is divided up for the federal government under the supervision of General Blanco. At Miguel's request, Chihuahua reports to Rafael Aguilar Guajardo , who, as Amado's representative, also has control of Ciudad Juárez . Sinaloa is subordinate to Ismael Zambrano, Tijuana remains the sphere of influence of the brothers Benjamin and Ramón Avendaño, Emilio Quintero Payán receives Nogales and Hermosillo , Chapo's partner Heriberto "El Güero" Palma receives San Luis Río Colorado , Mexicali receives the territory from Rafael Chao and last but not least El Chapo Tecate , officially making him a boss. Chapo and Güero run into conflict with the Avendaño brothers' Tijuana cartel , and Amado is released from custody to help bring peace. Despite an agreed armistice, the Avendaños have Güeros' wife and children murdered and the war is rekindled; after this tragedy, Ishmael sided with Chapo. When the Avendaños, in collaboration with members of the Norteños from San Diego , are able to arrest Guzmán at Guadalajara Airport in May 1993, he manages to escape; however, Cardinal Juan Jesús Posadas Ocampo was shot dead in the shooting on behalf of the government. In order to cover up his murder, the murder of Cardinal El Chapo is attached and from then on he is on the run. During his escape to El Salvador , where he was expecting a 5 ton shipment of cocaine, Chapo negotiates a partnership with a local boss from Guatemala , Otto Herrerías, and later becomes Toño and his lover Chío in Guatemala City with his right-hand man arrested before being incarcerated in the Altiplano maximum security prison . During his incarceration, he was placed in solitary confinement several times for attempted bribes and the uncovered planning of his escape . Remembering his rise in Pedro Avilés Pérez's organization at the age of 16, he does not give up hope.
The second season starts 8 years after the last season. Guzmán spent eight years in prison, while he himself was transferred to a better prison, Amado passed away in 1997 and Ismael is pulling the strings that Chapo can escape from custody in January 2001. Thanks to the alliance with Don Sol - a candidate for the presidency - he is able to defeat his enemies and transform the Sinaloa cartel with influential allies into the most powerful organization in the country. He succeeds in pushing the Avendaños from Tijuana out of business and, with the support of Ismael and the Bernal Leyda brothers, he founds a new federation under his command with the Plasencia brothers from the Milenio cartel , the brothers Chente and Rodolfillo from Tijuana -Cartel and later with Nazario Moreno of the Michoacán family . He goes to war against Raciel Cardenas and " Tony Tormenta " from the Gulf cartel and thus has their military arm called Los emes , led by "El Cano", against him. El Chapo's imprisoned brother "El Pollo" is being murdered on behalf of Chente after his brother Rodolfillo was murdered through misconduct on behalf of El Chapo. Chapo meets the beauty queen Elba Coronado, whom he will make his wife on her 18th birthday and he goes to war with the Los emes against Chente during the fight, which makes the fight all the more difficult for the Federación. After a truce that was concluded by Arturo Bernal Leyda, the Bernal Leyda brothers are betrayed by Chapo themselves in order to be able to reverse the imprisonment of his son Quino, whereby Alfredo is imprisoned. Arturo and his partner “La Muñeca” join forces with El Cano and Chente to put El Chapo down. During this power struggle, Chapo mistakenly loses his son "El Moreno" and due to Chapo's apparent inability, Nazario Moreno and the Plasencia brothers leave the Federación as neutral parties. Tony Tormenta, who has been replaced by El Cano as local boss, takes the side of El Chapo at the request of his imprisoned brother Raciel and La Muñeca can also win Chapo on his side, whereby the Federación succeeds in cooperation with the government El Cano, Chente and Arturo to be phased out. Arturo is murdered by Marines during a fierce battle, Chente is arrested and El Cano is forced to flee his territory. El Chapo appoints his right-hand man, Toño, as the new boss of Guadalajara because of his merits. Conrado Sol is advancing in his political career and the Sinaloa cartel is now the most powerful organization in the country.

Trivia
According to the media, El Chapo himself wants to sue the streaming service Netflix because his person was used for the series without asking and without payment and would make him bad as a person.
