Ernst Paulus (athlete)

Ernst Paulus (born January 3, 1897 in Marburg , † September 12, 1986 in Berlin-Reinickendorf ) was a German athlete and Olympic participant who was successful as a discus thrower in the 1920s .

Ernst Paulus from VfB Gießen was second in the German championships in 1922 in Duisburg in the 110-meter hurdles behind Heinrich Troßbach and in the discus behind Gustav Steinbrenner . In 1927 Paulus started for FC 09 Wetzlar when he finished second in the discus throw behind Hermann Hänchen . At the German Championships in Düsseldorf in 1928 , he won the title with a width of 47.35 m. Starting for VfL Wetzlar since 1928 , he finished second behind Hans Hoffmeister in 1930 .

Between 1922 and 1930, the 2.02 m tall Paulus competed in the national jersey six times, and at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam he was the flag bearer of the German Olympic team. In Amsterdam he threw the discus at 44.15 m and was the best German in seventh place.

Ernst Paulus was head of the Wetzlar office for physical exercise in the 1920s. After the Second World War he was the trainer of SC Stahl Riesa , and in the 1960s he was the managing director of the Palatinate Athletics Association. Ernst's brother Friedrich Paulus was a career officer and was promoted to field marshal in World War II.
