European Cup Winners' Cup 1968/69

The 1969/70 European Cup Winners 'Cup was the tenth game in the European Football Cup Winners' Cup. 33 club teams from 32 countries took part, including the defending champion Slovan Bratislava , 24 national cup winners and eight defeated cup finalists (Schalke 04, DFS Levski-Spartak Sofia, BK Frem Copenhagen, Olympiakos Piraeus, PSV Eindhoven, Mjøndalen IF, Académica de Coimbra and Glasgow Rangers ).

From Germany, the DFB Cup finalist FC Schalke 04 was at the start, as cup winners Bayern Munich had also become German champions and thus qualified for the European Cup in 1969/70 . From the GDR, the FDGB Cup winner 1. FC Magdeburg , from Austria ÖFB Cup winner SK Rapid Wien and from Switzerland FC St. Gallen took part in the competition.

Manchester City and Górnik Zabrze contested the final in the Prater Stadium in Vienna on April 29, 1970. Manchester City prevailed 2-1.

Top scorer was Włodzimierz Lubański from Górnik Zabrze with seven goals.

mode

As usual, the participants played the winner in pure cup mode with home and return matches. If there was a tie after both games, the number of goals scored away decided ( away goal rule ). If their number was the same, a playoff took place on a neutral pitch, as a penalty shoot-out was not yet planned. If the play-off ended in a draw even after a possible extra time, the winner was determined by tossing a coin . The final was decided in a game on a neutral court. In the event of a tie after extra time, a replay would have been scheduled, as a penalty shoot-out was not planned in the final either.
