Evgeni Evgenjewitsch Stalew ( Russian Евгений Евгеньевич Сталев , English transcription: Evgeny Stalev; born May 19, 1979 in Lytkarino , Moscow Oblast , Russian SFSR ) is a Russian billiards player . In 1999 and 2000 he became world champion in the free pyramid , a discipline of Russian billiards . He also plays pool and has won a Euro Tour tournament , among other things .

Career

Russian billiards

Yevgeny Stalev started playing billiards at the age of nine . His father opened a billiards club in Lytkarino at this time , where Yevgeny and his older brother Maxim trained together. He achieved his first major success when he was thirteen when he became the Russian champion. In 1995 he won an unofficial world championship in Russian billiards for the first time . In the following years he was successful at five other such world championships. In 1996 he was again Russian champion.

1999 Stalew won the first official host of the World Cup in the Free pyramid . The following year in Kirkel he defeated the Kazakh Emil Mudarissow 7: 6 in the final . Until 2019, he was the only player who managed to defend his title at a world championship in Russian billiards. At the 2001 World Cup , he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Rustam Usmonov . After not taking part in 2002 , he moved into the final again in 2003 , where he met Jaroslaw Wynokur , whom he had defeated 4-2 in the preliminary round. In the final, however, he had to admit defeat to the Ukrainian after a 3-0 lead in the meantime 5: 7. A few weeks later, Stalew won the Asian Cup with a 7-2 final victory over Kanybek Sagyndykow . In the following years he did not take part in tournaments in Russian billiards anymore due to differences of opinion with the Russian billiards association FSBR and because of low prize money and focused on pool billiards . In 2011 tournaments followed again. So he reached the round of 32 of the Asian Cup and the round of 64 at the Kremlin Cup . At the end of the year he came third in the tournament marking the 20th anniversary of Kazakhstan's independence .

At the 2012 Asian Cup, Stalew was eliminated in the round of 16 against Älibek Omarow . In November 2012 he won the Kremlin Cup . In the final against Kanybek Sagynbajew he turned a 0-3 deficit into a 5-3 win. A little later he reached the quarterfinals of the Galaxy Cup. Ten years after his last World Cup participation in the individual, Stalew lost in September 2013 at the Free Pyramid World Championship after a first round win against Vasily Kudrin in the second round against Jan Hryhorjeu . At the Kremlin Cup 2013 he had to admit defeat to his compatriot Pawel Mechowow as defending champion in the round of 32 .

In August 2014 he took part in the World Cup in the Combined Pyramid for the first time and reached the round of 16, in which he was defeated by the Uzbek Aleksandr Sidorov 3: 6. At the Empire Cup 2014 he finished third after being knocked out against Aleksandr Sidorov again. In the following years he played only a few tournaments. In 2016 he finished sixth at the Empire Cup. In March 2017, he reached the semi-finals of the Cup of Legends and lost to Yegor Kurenjow . In 2018 he made it into the round of the best 32 at the Savvidi Cup , where he clearly lost 5-0 to reigning world champion Iossif Abramov . Pool

After the 1991 European Youth Pool Pool Championship was held in Saint Petersburg , Stalew began to play pool . In 1992 he took part in a tournament in Saint Petersburg and moved into the final with a win against Yuri Sosnin . In 1995 he won the 9-ball title at the Polish Open Championship by beating Krzysztof Kutacha in the final . A year later he managed to defend his title in the final against Mariusz Gnitecki . In January 1998 he reached the final of the Spain Open with victories against the European champions Oliver Ortmann , Ralf Souquet and Thomas Engert , in which he defeated the Swiss Samuel Clemann . This made him the first Russian to achieve a podium finish on the Euro Tour and the only Russian tournament winner until 2013 . In 1999 he reached the round of 16 at the 9-ball World Cup in Cardiff , where he was defeated by the Taiwanese Chao Fong-Pang 8:11. In the same year he became Russian champion in the discipline 14/1 endless . In December 1999, he finished third at the Finland Open . In May 2000 he finished third at the Russian Open in Kaliningrad , winning his third and so far last Euro Tour medal. In early 2001, Stalew was ninth in the 9-ball competition of the Derby City Classic . In the same year he won the Moscow Cup and reached the final of the Russia Cup. At the 9-ball World Cup , however, he was eliminated in the preliminary round. In September 2001, he finished seventh at the US Open . At the Derby City Classic 2002 he finished eighteenth in 9-ball. After winning the George Joblon Memorial in the final against Johnny Archer , he finished ninth at the Reno Open in June 2002. A little later he reached the round of 32 at the 9-ball World Cup , in which he was defeated by the Dutchman Rico Diks . At the US Open 2002 he was seventeenth.

At the Derby City Classic 2003 he only came in twentieth in 9-ball. After he had already reached the final in the previous year, Stalew won a tournament on the Joss Northeast Tour for the first time in March 2003 . A few days later he was ninth in the Pro Players Championship at the Super Billiards Expo. In July 2003 he was eliminated from the 9-ball world championship in the round of 64 against Ramil Gallego . At the US Open 2005 he reached seventeenth place.

In early 2006 he finished ninth in the Pro Players Championship at the Super Billiards Expo. In the summer of the same year he took part in the International Pool Tour (IPT), the pool tournament series with the highest endowment up to that point. In July he surprisingly reached sixth place at the IPT North American Open. In September 2006 he came in at the World Open 8-Ball Championship, the final tournament of the IPT, however, on rank 61. A little later he took 33rd place at the US Open. At the Derby City Classic 2007, Stalew finished 81st in the Bank Pool . In March 2007 he won a tournament on the Blaze ABCD 9-Ball Tour and a few days later he finished ninth in the Pro Players Championship, as in 2003 and 2006.

In 2012, Stalew finished 22nd in the 9-ball competition of the Derby City Classics. In 2013 he reached the round of 16 at the Kremlin Cup and lost 5-9 to Nick Malai . At the Derby City Classic 2014 he finished 21st in 9-ball. In August 2014 he moved into the semifinals of the World 14.1 Tournament , after defeating Justin Bergman and Tony Robles , among others , in which he was defeated by the eventual tournament winner Darren Appleton with 145: 200. In November 2014 he made it to the final of the Kremlin Cup , in which he had to admit defeat to his compatriot Ruslan Tschinachow 7: 8. At the Kremlin Cup 2015 he was defeated 6: 8 in the quarter-finals to the multiple world champion Thorsten Hohmann . In 2016 he was eliminated in the round of 32 with 1: 9 against Darja Sirotina .
