Fara (wine)
Fara is a dry red wine from the northern Italian region of Piedmont , which in 1969 received a "controlled designation of origin " ( Denominazione di origine controllata - DOC), which was last updated on March 7, 2014. It is named after the municipality of Fara Novarese in the province of Novara .
Cultivation
The production area belongs to a historically significant wine region, which is located at the last foothills of the Alps on both sides of the Sesia River in the provinces of Vercelli and Novara . Here are ten DOP wine zones, represented by the Consorzio Tutela Nebbioli - Alto Piemonte consortium: Gattinara DOCG , Ghemme DOCG , Boca DOC , Bramaterra DOC , Colline Novaresi DOC , Coste della Sesia , Fara DOC, Lessona DOC , Sizzano DOC , Valli DOC Ossolane DOC . The defining grape variety for the wines of these areas is the Nebbiolo , which is regionally also called "Spanna".
The cultivation zone is located on the territory of the municipalities of Fara Novarese and Briona .
The DOC Fara is one of the smallest growing areas in Italy.

The wine is made for the most part from the grape variety Nebbiolo (50–70%) with the possible blending partners Vespolina and / or Uva Rara which individually or together can have a share of (30–50%). Other red wine grape varieties may contain up to (10%). The prescribed maturation period for the Fara DOC is 22 months (of which 12 in wooden casks), with the addition of "Riserva" 34 months (of these 20 in wooden casks).
