Frank Sinatra / discography
This discography is an overview of the released sound carriers of the artist Frank Sinatra , especially the albums. According to the sources, he has sold more than 150 million records so far, making him one of the performers with the highest number of records sold worldwide . Frank Sinatra's most successful release is the Duets album with around 3.8 million units sold.
Song material, arrangers and orchestra leaders
Frank Sinatra was primarily a song interpreter; the lyrics and melodies of the songs he sang came from others in the vast majority of cases. The composers and songwriters who appear most frequently in his repertoire include Harold Arlen , Irving Berlin , Johnny Burke , Sammy Cahn , George Gershwin , Ira Gershwin , Mack Gordon , Oscar Hammerstein , Lorenz Hart , Antônio Carlos Jobim , Jerome Kern , Frank Loesser , Rod McKuen , Johnny Mercer , Cole Porter , Richard Rodgers , Jule Styne , Jimmy Van Heusen , Victor Young and Ned Washington . Kurt Weill and Bert Kaempfert , among others, are represented from German-speaking countries ; the only German composer who composed a song for Sinatra directly was Heinz Kiessling . Among the ranks of younger composers and songwriters are Peter Allen , the Beatles , Jim Croce , John Denver , Neil Diamond , Gayle Caldwell , Eric Carmen , Billy Joel , Elton John , Bruce Johnston , Kris Kristofferson , Barry Manilow , Joni Mitchell , Joe Raposo , Paul Ryan , Neil Sedaka , Paul Simon and Jimmy Webb .
Sinatra only occasionally worked as a songwriter, namely on This Love of Mine (1941), Peachtree Street (1950), Take My Love (1950), Sheila (1950), I'm a Fool to Want You (1951), Mr Success (1958) and the Christmas carol Mistletoe and Holly (1957). In many other cases, however, he took the liberty of changing some words or lines in the text lines written by others for his own recording.
The arrangers and studio orchestral conductors with whom Sinatra worked most often and for the longest time on his studio recordings were Axel Stordahl (from 1940 to 1961), Nelson Riddle (1953–1985), Billy May (1957–1988), Gordon Jenkins (1957– 1981) and Don Costa (1961-1982). In addition, Heinie Beau , Billy Byers , Eumir Deodato , Robert Farnon , Ernie Freeman , Neal Hefti , Skitch Henderson , Quincy Jones , Johnny Mandel , Claus Ogerman , Sy Oliver , George Siravo and Torrie Zito arranged for Sinatra.
From 1943 he was accompanied by Skitch Henderson (1940s and early 1950s), Bill Miller (from the 1950s to 1970, 1974–1978 and 1986–1988), Quincy Jones (1958 and 1964–1966), Vincent as orchestra conductor at concerts Falcone jr. (1978–1983 and 1985–1986), Joe Parnello (1983–1985) and most recently his son Frank Sinatra jr. (1988-1995). His arrangers Riddle, Jenkins and Costa, on the other hand, rarely appeared in this position. Leonard Bernstein accompanied him at the inauguration gala for John F. Kennedy organized by Sinatra in 1961 . Sinatra went on tour with the complete big bands of Count Basie , Joe Bushkin , Woody Herman , Sy Oliver , Raymond Paige and Buddy Rich as well as with various philharmonic and symphony orchestras from the USA, Europe and Australia.
Important songs (selection)
His most important and best-known songs, some of which have accompanied him for decades (he recorded around 1,300 different songs in total in the studio, another 600 only sung on the radio, on television or at concerts), include:

Live albums (LPs / CDs)
Judging by the large number of professionally recorded concerts (there are well over 300 from all decades of his career and for all Sinatra labels), comparatively few official live albums have been released on LP or CD over a long period of time - the first only in 1966, and only four more during his lifetime. Most of the albums are a mix of different performances. In 2006 a more comprehensive live box appeared for the first time. (The countless bootlegs in circulation are not taken into account in the following).
- Sinatra at the Sands (double album with Count Basie , reprise 1966) (mix of different concerts)
