Hlohovec (until 1927 Slovak also "Frašták"; German Freistad [l] , more rarely also Freistadt an der Waag , Hungarian Galgóc ) is the largest town of the Okres Hlohovec in western Slovakia in the lower Waag valley , left of the river on the southern and western edge of the Inowetz Mountains.
history
The city was mentioned for the first time in 1113 as Golguz / Golgoc , although the place was already populated in this area in the Neolithic , during the time of the Quadi and the Great Moravian Empire . In 1365 a German city was founded in addition to the already existing Slovak settlement, which was built around a trapezoidal market square as a central facility. During the Turkish Wars, the city often suffered from fighting.
In 1920 the city got the official name Hlohovec , which actually means hazel thorn or hawthorn .
Attractions
- Michaelskirche: Gothic Catholic church , was mentioned as early as 1242 and was rebuilt several times in the following years.
- Anna-Kapelle: next to the Michaelskirche on a polygonal ground plan built chapel from 1748; it is the burial place of the Erdődy family , who strongly influenced the city's development
- Castle: the three-winged complex with an irregular square inner courtyard is the dominant feature of the place; it was built in the 18th century on the place of a castle that was destroyed by the Turks and only partially rebuilt and is now a boarding school
Administration and twin cities
Administratively, Hlohovec consists of the actual city and the incorporated town of Šulekovo , which is located on the right side of the Waag and was incorporated in 1980. The place Svätý Peter pri Váhu (German Sankt Peter ), which was north of the city, was incorporated in 1953 and is now officially part of the actual city.
