Götze (family name)
Götze and Goetze is a family name .
Origin and meaning
The name is a variant of Götz or Gottfried . Götze therefore means "son of Götz", where Götz is a short form of Gottfried (cf. also Fritz as short form of Friedrich).
distribution
The name Götze is represented throughout Germany, but has a regional focus in East Germany between Berlin and the Thuringian Forest. (In comparison, the Götz variant is most widespread in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria.)
The spelling Goetze with oe instead of ö is a comparatively rare form with a ratio of 1:10 and without a clear regional focus.
