Life

origin

Georg Brunsig von Brun came from a family who came to Peine from the Upper Palatinate around 1550 , where they no longer called themselves "von Brun", but first "Brunsius" and then "Brunsich". It provided Kurhannoversche civil servants and officers and in 1752 received the imperial noble status for the Mecklenburg-Strelitz Privy Councilor Hartwig Heinrich Brunsich , general post director, authorized minister, coin tenant and freemason , with the imperial knighthood and the predicate "Edler von Brun". His nephew Heinrich Wilhelm Brunsich (1699-1787), kurhannoverscher bailiff to Nienover , received in 1780 an imperial nobility confirmation with the title "Brun". Georg was the son of the Hessian captain Nikolaus Adam Wilhelm Brunsig Edler von Brun and his wife Karoline, née Wachter. Nikolaus Adam Wilhelm was a grandson of Heinrich Wilhelm Brunsich, who had received his nobility diploma in 1780.

Military career

Brun entered the Hessian service in 1799, was employed in his father's regiment and was promoted to secondary lieutenant until 1806 . After the War of the Fourth Coalition and the dissolution of Kurhessische Army Brun joined the Westphalian army and took as a first lieutenant in the first regiment of the line in 1809 at Dobendorf , Braunschweig and Nossen in the battles against Schill part. In August 1810 he was promoted to captain in the 8th Infantry Regiment. In this capacity Brun took part in the Battle of Moshaisk in 1812 during the Russian campaign. During the retreat, he remained ill in Königsberg and after his recovery he joined the Russian-German Legion . He was wounded in the Battle of Wavre and awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd class. After the peace treaty he moved into a garrison in Nordhausen , where there was a rift with his battalion commander von Natzmer. Thereupon Brun was sentenced by a court martial to several years in the fortress. Before the end of his sentence, however, he was pardoned and aggregated to the 29th Infantry Regiment by cabinet order of July 26, 1819 . Since he did not hold a position, Brun dealt with suggestions for improvement for the division school in Trier . After the death of director Johann Bachofen von Echt, he took over his post in the 16th division on May 19, 1824 . In mid-June 1825 he was transferred as the oldest company commander to the 10th Infantry Regiment , where he was promoted to major on September 7, 1828 . Brun acted from May 8, 1829 to March 29, 1830 as director of the division school of the 11th division and then as commander of the 1st battalion in the 10th Landwehr Regiment. Seven years later he resigned in the same capacity in the 10th Infantry Regiment, was appointed Lieutenant Colonel at the end of March 1840 , and on March 25, 1841 was charged with the command of the 5th Infantry Regiment . On January 13, 1842, he was appointed regimental commander in Danzig and on April 7, 1842, he was promoted to colonel . This was followed from June 10, 1846 to April 10, 1848 as a commander of the 9th Infantry Brigade in Glogau . Brun then returned to Trier and was given command of the 16th Infantry Brigade . In this position he became major general on May 10, 1848 .

On the occasion of the suppression of the revolutionary unrest in the Palatinate and Baden , Brun was charged with leading the 4th Division. He took part in the battles at Kirchheimbolanden , Waghäusel and Wiesenthal. During the occupation of Baden he stayed in Karlsruhe . His behavior was honored on September 20, 1849 by the award of the order Pour le Mérite . From Grand Duke Leopold Brun received the Grand Cross of the Order of the Zähringer Lion . After returning to the peace relationship, he was briefly in command of the 15th Infantry Brigade , on November 4, 1851, he was commander of the 13th Division in Münster and on March 23, 1852, Lieutenant General . In 1855 Brun celebrated his 50th anniversary in the service and retired on April 2, 1857 for health reasons, conferring the character of General of the Infantry.
