Life

Giacchino came into contact with the world of film at the age of ten. At that time he liked to create animated short films in order to then add sound effects that he had recorded himself. His greatest hobby, however, was choosing the right music and incorporating it into the film. Ultimately, the score for the Star Wars films moved him to become a composer as well.

To make this dream come true, he attended the School of Visual Arts in New York City and, after successfully completing his degree, went to the Juilliard School . In addition to this postgraduate course, he worked at Universal Studios and Walt Disney . Disney Giacchino pulled two years later a special trip to Los Angeles, where he is the film-scoring programs of the University of California joined. Among other things, he took on jobs that had less to do with composition, but also covered other areas of film production.

In 1997, Giacchino was commissioned by DreamWorks to compose the music for the video game The Lost World , which is based on Steven Spielberg's box office hit Jurassic Park . Alongside Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, it should be one of the first two video games whose music was played by a large orchestra. After further commissions from DreamWorks, Giacchino was given the opportunity to compose for a game blockbuster for the first time with the Medal of Honor . From then on, he often composed for World War II games, where he was inspired by military marches of the Second World War . The soundtrack for Medal of Honor was offered for sale on CD due to the great demand and was referred to as the “finest video game score ever written” in the review on Allmusic .

With growing success, Hollywood director JJ Abrams became aware of Giacchino and hired him for the soundtrack of his new series Alias - The Agent . The result is a mix of technopop and classic agent motifs, such as those from the James Bond films, with which he would later come into contact again for the Pixar animated film The Incredibles .

In May 2000, Giacchino released his first symphony, called Camden 2000, at the Sony E-Center in Camden, New Jersey . A year later, the Medal of Honor Underground , for which he had also written the music, won the Academy Award of Interactive Arts & Sciences for Best Composition for a Video Game. The successor Medal of Honor Frontline also won the award and, like the next part, Medal of Honor Allied Assault and the pilot game Medal of Honor , was performed by the Seattle Symphony Orchestra under Giacchino as conductor.

In 2004 J. J. Abrams came back to him as he was preparing his new series Lost . So Giacchino composed the music for all six seasons of the series. The soundtrack for the first season was released in March 2006, the second followed in September of the same year. The soundtrack for the third season was also released in 2008 and the fourth season in 2009. As with Medal of Honor , such publications are not the rule.

During this time Giacchino was still composing music for video games, but had to pass more and more often because of his numerous works on films. Although he composed the theme songs for Mercenaries and Black , the score was completed and orchestrated by his friend and colleague Chris Tilton. Also Medal of Honor experienced a break, so that the parts of Rising Sun , Pacific Assault and European Assault by Christopher Lennertz were set to music.

Giacchino also wrote the credits for Cloverfield , the only music composed specifically for the film. For the soundtrack to Star Trek he received a Grammy nomination for the top finally the Oscar , Golden Globe , BAFTA Award and the Grammy Award for "The Best Score Soundtrack Album", the best film music .
