Goran Jagodnik (born May 23, 1974 in Koper , SR Slovenia ) is a Slovenian basketball player . Jagodnik played in his home country until he was 26, before the national player continued his career mainly in other European leagues after the Bosman decision from 1999. Jagodnik played mainly in Turkey , Russia , Serbia and Poland , where he was multiple champion and individually Most Valuable Player of the PLK 2006 with Prokom Sopot . Since 2010 Jagodnik extended his active career in his Slovenian homeland and was also active in the national team until 2011 , with which he was also a 2010 World Cup participant after finishing fourth in the 2009 European Championship .

Career

Jagodnik began his career at his parent club in Koper, with whose men's team he was able to become national runner-up in 1993. A year later he moved to KD Hopsi in Polzela , with whom he reached three other runners-up championships in addition to winning the cup from 1996 to 1998. With the exception of the cup final in 1996, all of the championship final series as well as the cup final games in 1994 and 1997 were lost to the then dominant series champions KK Union Olimpija from the capital Ljubljana . After Jagodnik had seen only short playing times behind teammates like Marko Milič and Matjaž Smodiš in his second European Championship finals in 1999 , he made use of the new freedom of movement that came about after the Bosman decision and moved abroad for the first time. With Türk Telekomspor from Ankara he lost in the 1999/2000 season as the main round eight in the play-offs of the Türkiye Basketbol Ligi against the main round first Efes Pilsen Istanbul . With local rivals Mydonose Kolejliler, Jagodnik missed the play-offs a year later in eleventh place, which he then played in the Swiss national basketball league at the club from Lausanne . In the 2001 European Championship finals , the Slovenes defeated the host and later European runner-up, Turkey , but after losing extra time in the final group game against Latvia , they even missed the intermediate round, as in Jagodnik's first participation in 1997 .

In the 2001/02 season Jagodnik played for Lokomotive from Mineralnye Vody in the then top Russian division Superleague . At the end of the season, the team defended third place from the previous year and won the bronze medal of the Russian championship in the play-offs. For the next four years Jagodnik played in Sopot for Prokom Trefl. After another runner-up in 2003, the future series champion won his first three Polish championships with Jagodnik, who in 2006 was also named MVP of the Polish PLK league . After Trefl was eliminated in the ULEB Cup 2003/04 in the round of 16 against the eventual title winner Hapoel Jerusalem , they were able to reach the intermediate round of the 16 best teams at their own premiere in the highest-ranking European club competition ULEB Euroleague 2004/05 , in which they initially remained without a win . After the ULEB Euro League 2005/06 the Top16 round missed, changed Jagodnik after the third championship and his MVP award for the 2006-07 season, first to Russia again in the capital Moscow to MBK Dynamo, who previously with coach Dušan Ivković the ULEB Cup in 2005/06 . But in mid-November 2006 they separated already back and Jagodnik allowed himself after the early wintry Moscow five weeks Campania at Legea Scafati in the Italian Serie A before in the Polish League he returned to runner Anwil from early 2007 Włocławek . After Anwil had clearly lost the two final series against Trefl, they fought their way up to the seventh decisive game in the 2007 semi-final series, which the defending champion ultimately won.

After Milič and Marko Tušek resigned from the national team and Boštjan neighbor was missing, the internationally mature Jagodnik was in demand again in the national team at the 2007 European Championship finals . When he took part in the final round for the fourth time, Jagodnik made significant contributions to the game for the first time at the advanced competitive athlete's age of 33, and Slovenia was well on the way to its first Olympic qualification after five wins at the start. But after the blowout with 77:47 over Germany with Dirk Nowitzki , they lost the following three matches, including the quarter-final against Greece with one point difference after eleven-point lead over the last quarter and the rematch in the placement round against Germany, so that they missed direct qualification after the final victory over France in seventh place. As a result, Jagodnik played two seasons at the KK Hemofarm in Vršac , Serbia , interrupted by a season at the Czech series champion ČEZ Basketball from Nymburk , with whom he won the double in the Czech Republic in 2009 . In the ULEB Cup 2007/08 he and KK Hemofarm had lost the round of 16 against the eventual finalist Akasvayu Girona , before he failed in the preliminary round of the Eurocup , as the competition was now called, with Nymburk, of all things, at Hemofarm Vršac. A year later he did not fare better with KK Hemofarm in the preliminary round of the Eurocup 2009/10 when they were eliminated as the bottom of the group.

After the final missed Olympic qualification in 2008, national coach Aleš Pipan handed over the reins to Jurij Zdovc . The former world and European champion had played with Jagodnik himself in the national team until the end of the 1990s and reactivated his former teammate for the 2009 European Championship in Poland, where Jagodnik had played professionally for a long time. After a good preliminary round with only one defeat, Slovenia this time secured the group victory in the intermediate round after clear successes over the supposed hosts Lithuania and the actual hosts Poland as well as a narrow success over Turkey . After the narrow quarter-final victory over Croatia , Slovenia narrowly missed the first medal win after independence after narrow defeats against Serbia and again Greece in fourth place. Memi Bečirovič also nominated Jagodnik as the new national coach for the 2010 World Cup , in which Slovenia then lost significantly in the quarter-finals against hosts Turkey after only one preliminary round defeat against the top favorites and eventual title winners United States . Under coaching legend Božidar Maljković , Jagodnik gave his provisional strike from the national team at the 2011 European Championship finals . In addition to the clear quarter-final defeat against defending champions Spain , the defeat in the placement round against hosts Lithuania sealed the renewed failure of the Olympic qualification, which the final victory over Serbia and the achievement of seventh place did not change anything.

For the 2010/11 season, the now 36-year-old Jagodnik had already returned to his Slovenian homeland and now also played in the capital for KK Union Olimpija, which had since lost their dominance of the 1990s. With the runner-up Jagodnik was able to defend the title win in the national cup competition twice, but in the final series of the championship they lost twice in a row to the defending champion KK Krka from Novo mesto . Union Olimpija was still allowed to participate in the ULEB Euroleague 2010/11 and in October 2010 it was Jagodnik at his advanced age who was able to secure the award as monthly MVP in the highest-ranking European club competition. After finishing second in the preliminary round, it was only enough to win in the intermediate round, which was also the poor result in the preliminary round of the following ULEB Euroleague 2011/12 . Union Olimpija qualified for this in particular by finishing second in the ABA league in 2011, when KK Partizan Belgrade had to admit defeat by just three points in the final . In the following season, however, they missed the 2012 Final Four tournament of the ABA League in sixth place . Between 2013 and 2015 Jagodnik continued to play for KD Hopsi before KK Union Olimpija reactivated him again for the ABA league at the end of the season at the age of 41, where he played in three games.
