From 1979 to 1984 he was a member of the Swedish parliament , from 1984 to 1989 a local councilor in Katrineholm . In 1989 he returned to national politics and was second minister of education for two years (until 1991). From 1991 to 2007 he was again a member of the Swedish Reichstag, where he was chairman of the Agriculture Committee from 1991 to 1993. From 1993 to 1994 he was active in the economic committee of the Reichstag and at the same time economic policy spokesman for his party, the Social Democratic Workers' Party (SAP). When the Social Democrats came back to power after the 1994 election , Persson was appointed to the government by Prime Minister Ingvar Carlsson as Minister of Finance . After Carlsson's resignation, Göran Persson was elected chairman of his party on March 15 and on March 21, 1996 to the office of prime minister. After the 1998 election , in which the SAP lost votes, he continued to rule with a minority government . In the 2002 election , the Social Democrats were able to win.

Persson drew the consequences after the election defeat against the Alliance for Sweden in the 2006 election and announced on election night that he would not only submit the resignation of his government to the President of the Reichstag the following day , but also call a special party conference in March to elect a new party leader.

Persson's successor as Prime Minister was Fredrik Reinfeldt ( Moderata samlingspartiet ) .

Family and personal

Göran Persson has been married to Anitra Steen for the third time since December 2003 . He separated from his second wife, Annika Barthine, in December 2002 after seven years of marriage. Persson was previously married to Gunnel Claesson from 1978 to 1995. His two daughters come from this marriage.
