Hahnenkampf is the second album of Berlin Hip-Hop -Formation KIC . It was released on August 24, 2007 on the Royal Bunker label . On the same day the Record Release Party took place in Maria am Ostbahnhof , at which KIZ presented the album and played some songs from it live. In 2008 the sound carrier was re-released, including the bonus song Hell . In the same year the accompanying live album Hahnenkampf Live was also released .

Emergence

Since the independent label Royal Bunker usually only produces small volumes of records, the major label Universal was brought on board for the publication of Hahnenkampf . Instead of the hip-hop department, the rock department took care of the band.

“We just have a very good manager and a very good label boss, who both got involved and got the best out of it for us. The thing about the rock department is just that we liked them better and ultimately we get on well with them and they seem to understand what we do. At least most."

According to the band's interpretation, the album title Hahnenkampf was chosen because of a play on words. The direct translation is "cockfight", translated back it can mean "tail fight". On the other hand, due to its aggressiveness, the hip-hop scene is often referred to by KIZ as a cockfight.

Production and samples

The London producer Tai Jason steered the beats money eating (Stuffed rapper) , cockfighting , elbows Society (Pogen) and manatee at. The producer duo Wassbass, to which Nico von KIZ belongs, produced the tracks Let's celebrate (RMX) , Pauch It , Herbstzeitblätter , Neuruppin and Der durch das Tür Geher , while the beats to Spasst , 11. Plage and The Beauty and the Beast come from Biztram . Mach One also produced the track Klassenfahrt and Sti is responsible for Wenn es brennt . Two other songs ( Walpurgis Night and School Trip (Flashgordon RMX) ) were produced by Flashgordon. The beat for Böhses Mädchen was created by Coom and MC Motherfucker , a former member of the punk band Terrorgruppe , produced the piece Schwarz, Rot, Geld in collaboration with "Mr.T-Tom" Bitume . Beat zu Hölle is a co-production by Tony Hendrik, K. Van Haaren and Kim Merz.

The song Spasst contains a sample of the song Whoomp! (There It Is) by the hip-hop band Tag Team and the title track Hahnenkampf samples the songs The Prime Time of Your Life and Steam Machine from the house formation Daft Punk . Neuruppin also contains elements of the tracks The House of the Rising Sun by The Animals and Gunter Gabriel's Es ist ein Haus im Kosovo . Furthermore, the beat of Der durch die Tür Geher away from Los geht’s is based on the previous album Böhse Enkelz , which has the original version in the chorus and the instrumental of Let's Go by Trick Daddy feat. Twista and Lil Jon uses it.

There are two different covers , the album cover of the original version shows a male torso with a cocks mask on white, the cover of the re-release on a black background. The name of the artist is written in red above and in yellow, based on the font of the movie poster by Uhrwerk Orange , the name of the album below. The rest of the album's design, such as the posture of the rooster and the white background, show clear parallels to the Clockwork Orange DVD cover. A splashing wound , a blood-smeared floor and flying feathers are further details.

Guest Posts

In addition to the three protagonists, other artists are represented on seven songs on the album. The rapper Massimo, who is a close friend of the group, has guest contributions to the songs Böhses Mädchen and Pauch It , on the latter you can also hear Queen Mareen singing in the chorus. MC Motherfucker takes part in Schwarz, Rot, Geld , while Kuba and Cannibal Rob rap stanzas on the song Neuruppin . In addition, the singing of Bina Kolada ( Walpurgis Night ) and Leila ( Manatee ) can be heard on one song each. The The doctors -member Bela B is in the contained on the re-release song hell to hear.

More about the songs

Eat Money (Stuffed Rappers)

The song is the first single from Hahnenkampf, which was released on the same day as the album. In the video, which was directed by Joern Heitmann , KIZ staged a cockfight between black metal fans wearing corpsepaint and the droogs from Stanley Kubrick's film Uhrwerk Orange . A gay hip-hop couple is also shown kissing their tongues . This is a deliberate provocation of the band, with which the video differs greatly from the usual hip-hop videos and offends its own target group.

"[...] we just thought that you could probably shock a lot of people with something so banal, since homophobia is an important part of being German."

The line of text (“I've been unpopular since I signed up for the bunker, I've been making inhuman underground music”) is an allusion to Funny van Dannen's song “ inhuman underground music ”.

school trip

The song depicts the problems of youth violence based on a class trip and alludes to the events of the Rütli school and Columbine . Furthermore, the difference between the big city and the country is exaggerated ("We from the capital brought you the fire, at night you did it with the pigs in your barn"). There are two versions on the album that differ only in the beat (the Flashgordon Remix).

Fun

The song is the second single from the album and was also provided with a video by director Joern Heitmann. The text in Nico's part " Don't push me because I'm on the brink [...]" is a reference to the song The Message by Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five , which says "Don't push me, cause I'm close to the edge! ".

Naughty girl

The song addresses the increasing youth violence among girls. The members of KIZ express that they seek relationships with “bad girls” who make fun of the behavior of “normal” women. The incorrect spelling of the title is based on the name of the band Böhse Onkelz and was already taken up by KIZ for the title of their mixtape Böhse Enkelz . As a guest rapper Massimo is represented in the first verse of the song. One passage ends with the sample “If I die, then at least with the puller in a cunt”, which comes from the song Pimplegionär by Kool Savas . A music video was also released for this song, showing the band's concert recordings.

Cockfight

The song is the title song of the album. The text "Good day, good day, we fucked your life" is a pastiche of the song Good day by the band Wir sind Helden . The track itself was supposed to be called Guten Tag , but that was changed because a song with the album title was still missing.

11th plague

The title is an allusion to the Ten Plagues , which according to the Bible came upon Egypt. The text "I hang with Torch at the bar, we long girls on the ass" is an homage to Torch's song We were once stars , which the band satirized on the mixtape Böhse Enkelz in the song Wir werden now Stars .

When it burns

The song is socially critical and ironically addresses problems such as the ghetto (“Everyone in the ghetto likes you: A Euro street sweeper”), migration backgrounds (“Throw away your apprenticeship, commit an honor killing”), equality (“Girls, you do not have to do an education, you can cook and wash for a man all your life ”), violence in the family (“ watch TV, drink beer, beat his wife ”), suicide (“ jump from tithing into happiness, brother I pray for you ”), violence in schools (“ Revenge for the six in math is in daddy's armory ”), drugs (“ There is work for everyone here, brother you can tick coke ”), unemployment (“ You can slowly get on your mountain of debt rest ”), lack of chances (“ Believe in yourself, you will not make it ”), homophobia (“ Drop out of school, drop a gay man ”) and anti-Semitism (“ You too can be an artist, paint ” Jewish grave "). The track was supposed to be called Bleib 'lie first , but was then renamed to Wenn es brennt .

Pauch It

A song about smoking that starts with a quote from the movie xXx - Triple X. The consequences of tobacco consumption are presented in an ironic way (“Look how I pick up buttocks, I save for the lung prosthesis”). The problem of chain smoking is particularly alluded to ("I smoke while exercising, I smoke while having sex, and of course also when pooping"). The chorus includes the line: "I like to smoke - until I die".

The beauty and the beast

In The Beauty and the Beast is about rather unusual relationships. The first part shows the relationship with a homeless alcoholic , although the relationship is only reduced to the sexual aspect (“Because a man has to do what his cock wants to do”). The second part describes the relationship with an 80-year-old pensioner. Here, too, the topic is approached with black humor ("The ambulance has a flat tire - and you're slowly getting into rigor mortis "). The last part deals with the relationship with a female Nazi, based on the first two parts, which are about relationships with women who are perceived as rather repulsive . Peppered with allusions ("The total limb") and the reinterpretation of fascist racial ideology ("I fulfill the cliché - black giant cock "), this part depicts the sexually motivated relationship between an NPD voter and an anti-fascist .

Walpurgis Night

The song is about a person who is up to mischief on Walpurgis Night . Particularly striking are the text passages “The sun is shining out of my ass” and “… put on my pig's head mask”, which parody the rapper Sido , who usually appeared with a skull mask and in his song Mein Block the sentence: “… but it shines in the MV the sun out of my ass ”raps. In addition, the text passage can refer to the film series Saw , where the kidnapper puts on a pig's head mask before his act.

Elbow Society (Pogen)

The song was released on June 29, 2007 as an e-single and is therefore only available as a download. The chorus of the song addresses the pogo dance, which has its origins in the punk scene and is also common in the hip-hop scene with crunk . The individual stanzas are mainly composed of humorous puns ("I think you shit - where is my reward?"). A music video was also shot for this song.

Fall time leaves

The song parodies other German rappers in terms of flow and text. The flow is very reminiscent of Kool Savas , Sentino and Snaga & Pillath and many passages are from Ercandize (“It's time you learned English”), Saad and Bushido (“Look at this boy”), Kollegah (“I have now a Batmobile ”), Fler (“ The game in hand ”) and Samy Deluxe (“ The Unfickbare ... ”) directly taken over. In addition, the passage "We stretch our hands in the direction of the rising purple sun" is an allusion to the video of the rap group Die Fantastischen Vier for their song Ernen what wir sowed . The song ends with various sample excerpts from songs by the headliners, Sentino, Massive Töne , Ercandize and Toni-L . It deliberately cites below-average text passages (“And every sentence hits you hard like a fighting machine”) from the artists mentioned.

The entire text is a parody and is consciously made up of bad or meaningless comparisons (“I'm hard as a hard bread”; “We're back, as if we'd just come back”; “And the game burns as if we would have lit it ”;“ You are like gays, you look like gays ”). Furthermore, there are parodies z. B. on the homophobia (“It's time to grab each other's tails among men”).

Neuruppin

The song is a cover version of The House of the Rising Sun version of The Animals and Gunter Gabriel's There is a house in Kosovo . The title was changed to "A House in Neuruppin ". It's about a jaded first-person narrator who kills women on the weekend. The lyrics contain parallels to the deeds of Carl Großmann , which, however, were not intentional. Rather, the band was only made aware of Großmann's history afterwards. The song was released as an e-single and an interactive music video was created for it. A reference to Großmann is made in the video itself.

“Nico says it's the best melody that has ever been written, he always wanted to make a beat out of it. So he sat down with Grzegorz and did that. Besides Grzegorz's guitar, there is also a violin on the song that was played by our former crew member MTK. "

The one walking through the door

The song is the only solo track on the album. Nico, the interpreter of the song, made the beat himself in addition to the text. The chorus of the song consists of samples from the song Los geht’s , which previously appeared on the mixtape Böhse Enkelz . The person walking through the door was in this song with the lines: “No, you don't come in, I'm the bouncer - what do you mean who I am? The one who walks through the door! " On both songs he raps from the point of view of an unkempt, rioting alcoholic with a Berlin dialect .

  • Spiegel Online : “KIZ, pupils of the Berlin street rap company Royal Bunker, are the important, long overdue deconstruction of German gangsta hip-hop, harsh but unfair, that is: polemical to the limit of pain and beyond. A comic strip of urban madness. "
  • Die Zeit : “While other rappers use aggressive demarcation strategies to assert their“ authenticity ”, the KIZ system is open on all sides. Hahnenkampf relies on pop music, disco, Schlager, punk rock and techno as well as doctors, Grandmaster Flash or the classic House of the Rising Sun. "
  • laut.de : “65 minutes of logorrhea at the height of tastelessness, conventions and political correctness are neatly pooped. In other words, cockfight has everything that makes a Royalbunker release with advances to classic status. "

Awards

The album was named album of the month in 2007 in the August issue of hip-hop magazine Juice .
